How We Met
Christian and I met through the dating app, Hinge. Never in my wildest dreams did I 1) think I would use a dating app and 2) meet the man of my dreams while using it. I was always so against dating apps and websites, especially in Vegas because it’s such a transient town. I finally gave in to trying online dating after seeing some of my friends have success with it. We texted back and forth on the dating app for almost a month, never exchanging phone numbers, before I finally hinted that maybe we should meet in person.
Our first date was at a KBBQ place in Vegas and we spent 3 hours eating, conversing, and getting to know each other even more. The next couple of days, we talked on the phone for 2-3 hours each night about family, faith, goals, and what we each were looking for in a partner. He also asked me how I knew I was exclusive with someone. I told him I wanted to be asked and not assume things.
On our second official date, he picked me up after work and we went out for Filipino food. Right before the food arrived, he looked at me, grabbed my hands, and asked, “Will you be my girlfriend?” Without hesitation, I said, “Yes!”.
How They Asked
Christian is an active military serving in the Air Force. In February 2020, he got orders to relocate from Vegas to Southern CA. When he told me the news, I was both ecstatic to move closer to family and be back in CA but also sad to leave the life we had built in Vegas and all our friends who had become family. We were initially scheduled to move in April but because of COVID-19, it got moved to July and then October.
We had planned to move to our new location by the end of October and tried to do as many things on my “Vegas to-do list” prior to moving. Unfortunately with COVID-19, we weren’t able to check everything off the list, but one thing we were able to do was to take pictures at the famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign with some of our closest friends. We finished taking our pictures and one of our friends suggested we go to the Bellagio to see the new seasonal setup at the conservatory and botanical gardens, especially since it was on my “Vegas to-do list”.
We drove down the strip to the Bellagio and waited for everyone else to arrive. I noticed one of my friends carrying a much larger bag than she normally does but didn’t think anything of it at the time. We stood in line and waited to take our pictures inside the conservatory & botanical gardens. It was our group’s turn to enter and take pictures. Christian and I took a picture together and I noticed all our friends taking pictures of us, it wasn’t unusual so I didn’t think anything of it. Another couple in our group was taking their picture and Christian pulled me aside and said, “Can I speak to you over here?” Again, I didn’t think anything was going on so I said, “Okay”. We walked over to the designated spot and he started telling me things that I honestly can’t remember because it was then that I realized he was proposing, in PUBLIC, which I never imagined he would do. I started crying like crazy and so in shock to see the love of my life on one knee and asking me to marry him. He proposed with a stunning custom sapphire engagement ring.
After the proposal, he said he chose to propose then and there in front of our close friends so we could share this special moment with them before moving away. Remember, my friend who was carrying a larger than usual bag? Well, it turns out that she was carrying a bottle of champagne the whole time and waiting for our special moment to happen. I never understood when people would say, “You know when you know”, but after meeting Christian I finally figured it out and can honestly say that I have found the one. our
