Georgia and Luke
How We Met
Luke and I met as juniors in a high school chemistry class (no, the irony of that does not escape us!). We grew together through mutual friends and love of a certain galaxy far, far away. We began dating shortly before graduation our senior year, and stayed together through college.
how they asked
We are huge Star Wars nerds. HUGE. Think I’m exaggerating?
Luke is a member of the 501st Legion, an all-volunteer group of passionate Star Wars fans that specializes in charity through costuming. The 501st attend public events at ballparks, libraries, health fairs, and other locations to raise awareness and funds for charity organizations such as Toys for Tots and Children’s Miracle Network. Luke had spent the past 6 months constructing a camouflage Kashyyyk scout trooper (and, unbeknownst to me, planning to propose in it).
On May 14, we attended an event at the Brandywine Zoo in Wilmington, Delaware to raise donations for the zoo. The place was sold out, with thousands of people in attendance. Luke and the other troopers spent the day taking photos with eager fans of all ages, while I photographed and managed the crowds.
At the end of the day, troopers gathered together for a group photo at the center of the zoo.
I was standing on a chair, taking photos over the crush of people, when one of the zoo staff stepped forward and yelled a trooper’s ID number. Vaguely, I recognized it as Luke’s, and looked up from my viewfinder to see him, fully costumed, step out of the group and remove his helmet. He got down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and my world stopped.
The crowd was so loud, I barely heard him ask me to marry him.
I said yes (of course)! We hugged and kissed and the cheers were deafening!
Afterwards was a whirlwind of hugs and congratulations from strangers and friends alike. We were told we’d made a few Stormtroopers cry!
