How We Met
We met at a Harry Potter themed birthday pool party in 2014. It was a party for my friend from college, who also lived in our city. I attended UCLA, and so did some of Kevin’s friends, who were at the party. They invited Kevin since it was a local party. From the moment I was introduced to him, I knew there was something special about him. He was so sweet, and the most handsome guy I had ever seen. I was about to start graduate school at USC the next month, so I wasn’t really looking to date anyone, but something about Kevin made me change my mind. I still remember the exact moment we were introduced and how I was mesmerized by his beautiful green eyes.
He DJs for fun, so he started playing music on the Bluetooth speaker, and his phone ended up falling off the speaker and cracking. When that happened he said, “Aw man, now I can’t get your number since it’s cracked.” I got so shy because of how smooth he was, so I just laughed and ignored it. He thought I wasn’t interested, so he kept hanging out with me, but he didn’t think he would leave with my number. When I was getting ready to leave, I told him bye and asked him to put his number in my phone. I knew I couldn’t let the opportunity to stay in contact with him pass me by. That was the best decision of my life because now he’s my future husband.
how they asked
It all started with us inviting my best friends to celebrate my birthday in Guadalajara, Tequila, Mexico. We had plans to take the Jose Cuervo Tequila Express Train to Tequila, Jalisco, to learn all about how Tequila is made. Little did I know, Kevin had additional plans for us. We arrived in Mexico on Friday morning. We had the whole day to explore the city of Guadalajara and go shopping since our tour was scheduled for Saturday. We started Friday morning off with tacos de birria, a delicious Mexican dish that is a Guadalajara specialty. Afterward, we headed to a marketplace called San Juan de Dios, to get some shopping done. Afterward, we went back to our Airbnb to start getting ready for dinner and drinks in Tlaquepaque, which is a tourist area.
Right before we were about to get into our uber, one of my friends told me she “felt sick” and needed the key to the Airbnb. Two of my friends decided to stay behind with her and meet us at Tlaquepaque later. Kevin and I, as well as another friend, decided to head out to Tlaquepaque right away so we could put our names down at a restaurant. When we got to Tlaquepaque, we started taking pictures and walking around. My friends still hadn’t arrived, and I was getting worried. They finally told me that they were on their way, so we sat down in “El Parian,” the main restaurant in Tlaquepaque. When my friends finally arrived, Kevin asked me to go look at a different restaurant with him to see if it was less crowded. I didn’t think anything of it and agreed. We walked through the main plaza and Kevin suggested taking photos before the sunset.
We started taking pictures, and before I knew it, he was telling me how much he loved me. I was already crying, and before I knew it, he was down on one knee, asking me to be his wife. I said YES even before he asked me. Right after he asked to marry me, mariachis started playing and surrounding us. We were in our own world. It was the most beautiful moment of my life. We were both crying tears of happiness. The mariachis kept playing and we were just standing there, looking into each other’s eyes. Little by little, I noticed people in the crowd. My best friends were there, and they were crying too. Kevin’s parents were also there with a big ring prop for photos.
Kevin was able to pull our magical proposal off with help from his cousin, who lives in the city, and his friend. Guadalajara is special to us because both of our families are from there. The plaza that we got engaged in is historically known to be a romantic area. Kevin put so much detail and thought into a meaningful proposal and it was perfect. After the proposal, we had some drinks and went back to our Airbnb where I found a surprise engagement party for us. My friend wasn’t sick. They made an excuse to stay behind and decorate. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect and meaningful proposal filled with love and happiness. We are so excited to start our lives together as future husband and wife!
