Garrett and Evan
How We Met
Garrett and I both went to Texas A&M University. WHOOP! I was leaving a career informational wearing a navy blue suit, and when I exited the building and turned the corner, there was Garrett. I didn’t get past his piercing blue eyes, but he vividly remembers wearing baggy basketball shorts and an old stained t-shirt preparing for a day of studying. We stared at each other for what felt like eternity, and then just walked off… how anticlimactic.
The next day I couldn’t get him out of my head so I logged on to Facebook and stalked for hours till I arrived on his profile. In a moment of wavering confidence I messaged him and said, “Hey! I saw you on campus the other day, and I was wondering would you like to get a drink on Friday?” He said yes! Off we went to North-gate and we had an amazing time. A few days later I surprised him with tickets to Beauty and The Beast Live and the rest is history!
how they asked
I live in New York, and he was finishing school in College Station so I told him I didn’t think I was going to make it to his graduation… as if I would miss it! I flew from NYC to TX on December 16th, and with the help of some amazing friends I surprised him at dinner to attend his graduation. He was SHOCKED the video is pure gold. Little did he know the real surprise was coming the next day. We went to the ceremony, and afterward we attended lunch with his family. I swear it was like he was trying to ruin the surprise every step of the way, so I told him I had a surprise dinner planned to celebrate how proud I am of him.
Instead we drove to Houston, and parked outside of the McGovern Centennial Garden. We got out and I told him I had to blindfold him, he of course asked why, I said he might be getting a puppy… We walked through to the first arch of the rose garden where my friends were set up with cameras and a speaker that was playing “Marry Me” by Train. When we finally got to the right spot I removed his blindfold and began reading a letter to him.
“I love you more than I can ever put into words. Since the moment I met you I saw that you are full of kindness, compassion and ridiculous jokes. Over the past year and a half I have felt loved and supported in a way that I never imagined was possible. I have learned so much about myself through you and I could not be more grateful to have an amazing man standing by my side. At the end of every single day – good or bad – you have been there to fill my evenings with laughter. You always know how to calm me down even when I don’t know how to do it for myself.
The love I have for you is deep and vast. It’s scary at times knowing how much I depend on you, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. You are the best friend I have always wanted, my Handsome Man, my Putitos, the Giraffe to my Elephant, and the Elf to my Christmas… Will you make me the luckiest man in the world and be my husband?”
I got down on one knee and he leaned forward with a big kiss and said yes!
Afterward we stayed at the JW Marriott Downtown and had a beautiful suite covered in rose petals with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. The final surprise was a huge brunch at my Mom’s house the next day with all of our closest friends and family. It was the most incredible and magical weekend that could not have happened without the help of some phenomenal loved ones!
