How We Met
Gabe and I went to grade school together at St. John’s Lutheran School in Lake City, MN. That laid the foundation for our Christ centered relationship. One day, I was sitting in my 6th grade classroom, ten years ago, waiting for recess. Gabe walked in with this folded up note that said, “Will you go out with me?” He waited in the doorway of the classroom until I looked up and shook my head yes. Gabe walked away with the biggest smile on his face while I sat there beet red from blushing so much. A sixth grade relationship can be pretty tough. Our relationship sort of fizzled out (like most grade school relationships do), but I could never get him out of my mind. One night, there was a really bad storm. After not talking for probably months, Gabe texted me in the middle of the night to make sure I was okay because he knew I hated storms. We’ve been together ever since.
Someone once asked me if I knew if Gabe was “the one” from the beginning. I had no clue. God has a way of guiding my path without me even realizing He is doing it. When you find someone who opens car doors for you, dances with you in the middle of a bedroom to cheesy love songs, and is there for you like your best friend, why not just marry them? One of my favorite things to do with Gabe is go to church. Trusting God to guide your relationship is so comforting. Doing what God wants, like waiting to have sex until marriage, can be tough, but we know in the end it will be so worth it.
how they asked
My family owns a cabin in Grand Marais, MN. It’s absolutely beautiful there, which is why it’s become one of my favorite places in the world. Coincidentally, Gabe’s family used to take vacations to the exact same place when he was growing up. It’s become a pretty special place to us. Anyways, Gabe and I decided to take a trip there and stop in Duluth, MN on our way home. My mom, grandma, and one of my sisters were going to meet us at the Glensheen Mansion for a tour. (That’s also one of my favorite places to visit!) We arrived and started walking around the grounds by the lake and the gardens.
My mom suggested we go up this certain path, which confused me because it wasn’t even shoveled and I wasn’t sure we could walk on it, but I followed her lead and walked up this path. We came to a bridge with rose petals on it. I was holding back the tears at this point! Gabe had put together a video with pictures of us from all the years we’ve been together. He had my favorite song (Wanted by Hunter Hayes) playing in the background. We watched that and then he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.
He handed me a bouquet of roses and we turned around to walk off the bridge and I saw our whole families there! They made the four hour drive to be there for our special moment. It was such a surprise and so, so incredible to have them there for it.
There was also a photographer there taking pictures of such a raw, precious moment. He also arranged for my friend to take me to get my nails done so they would look good with the new ring. Now we’re engaged and planning a wedding!
