How We Met: A lot of people don’t actually know this about Robert and me, but I was the one who introduced myself to him.
He was performing in our college marching band, and being a band geek myself, I was immediately drawn to him. He played his instrument with a lot of passion but also captured the attention of many other band members with his jokes. I remember telling my best friend how cute he was. She tried to get me to go up to him, but I was too shy.
About a month later, our school held a bonfire rally and the marching band performed. It was casual, the performers were all in t-shirts and jeans. He was getting the crowd pumped up and we were all having such a good time. I was just about to approach him when the band left. I thought I had missed my chance. My best friend and I went back to our dorm room and I searched for hours until I found him on Facebook and added him as a friend. He accepted two days later and I messaged him after that telling him I knew I probably sounded like a creep, but I thought he was cute and I wanted to talk and hang out. He agreed! The rest is history.
how they asked: I’m sure I told Robert sometime ago that I wanted him to propose in front of my family, I just didn’t think he would remember. So when I brought him as my date to my sisters wedding in Minnesota, it hadn’t even occurred to me that all of my family was present. We live all over the country and the only way to join us is through a wedding. So there we were sitting at my sisters wedding reception, on this gorgeous lawn parked right next to a little corn field, when I realized Robert had been missing for sometime.
My two younger sisters shhhh-ed me and told me he was probably just using the restroom. I felt a little suspicious but denied the voices in my head until the dj started playing a song I recognized- one of Robert and my songs. I turned around and there he was asking me to dance. Butterflies flew around in my stomach as I realized what he was doing. I joined him on stage and we danced.
He told me how much he loved me, how happy he was that I found him, and how grateful he was that I was in his life. At that moment the song changed to our favorite songs and he pulled out the ring and got down on one knee. He told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with his best friend and asked me to marry him.
There was cheering coming from my family, shouting “say yes!” I said yes but he was so nervous he was trying to put the ring on the wrong hand!
