How We Met
Tom and I grew up less that 13 miles apart in Rochester, NY – but it took living among 3 million other people in New York City for us to ever actually meet. We became friends first, bonding over Genny Cream Ales and the Buffalo Bills, until one night – a month or so after meeting – Tom admitted he didn’t want to be with anyone else, and I agreed. After only six months of dating, I moved for a job in Washington DC, and (without being asked) Tom followed me down. Which was the greatest non-decision I’ve ever made. We’ve been living our biggest adventure ever since!
how they asked
We had booked our trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina nearly 8 months in advance. My entire family lives there, and I hadn’t seen them in over four years, so it was the perfect opportunity to go visit and also introduce Tom to them. In order to add a little adventure to the trip, we decided to add a stop at the Iguazu waterfalls before heading to BA. Unbeknownst to me (though there were a few close calls), Tom carried a ring inside our toiletries bag during the entire 12 hour flight, and 6 hour bus ride to Puerto Iguazu.
All the travel was worth it. The falls were breathtaking – pretty hard to put into words, but I’ll say this: only two things that beautiful have ever made me cry, and the other was Beyonce.
I found out later that Tom planned on proposing at the top of one of the highest waterfalls, but the fear of dropping the ring down the very wide grates was enough to steer him in a different direction. A smart call.
Instead, at the end of our first day hiking around the Argentinean jungle, Tom pulled me aside next to a lighthouse at the end of one of the paths (on solid ground). On it, someone had written the words “Esto recien comienza, continuara!” which translates to: “This is just the beginning, it’ll continue!” He saw that as the perfect sign, took my hands, and asked me to marry him – in Spanish! – to which I replied only with tears and sobs of “Is this serious?!” and eventually a resounding “Yes!”
It’s been only a couple weeks and I still find myself asking the same question! I could not be happier to be marrying the love of my life, my partner and my teammate, and so happy to have this beautiful memory to share with our families forever.
