How We Met
I can remember the very first time I met Malick – 11 years ago to be exact at our religious center. I remember it so vividly, like it was yesterday. I can remember exactly what he was wearing. He was in a brown corduroy jacket and dark-wash jeans, with a black sweater and some dark brown loafers. His curly hair was fro-like and he was tall. Very, very tall. Probably the tallest person I’d ever seen. As he approached me, he stared confidently into my eyes, and I liked that. He smiled, held out his hand to shake mine and said “Hi, I’m Malick.” Blushing, I mumbled “Hi, I’m Farheen.” I remember grinning from ear to ear in that moment, and to this day, he still has me smiling that big. I am so blessed and grateful for having such an amazing man in my life. Here is a fun fact: we went to his high school senior year prom together in 2005 and he was my first kiss. He is, and always will be, my happily ever after…
how they asked
On our last night in Santorini, Malick told me the family had reservations for a sunset dinner. He told me the lady that organized our stay had planned a special surprise for us all. While the rest of the family was taking their time getting ready, he suggested that we get some pictures taken for the blog and head to the restaurant to hold the table reservation. We got to the location and started walking to the “restaurant.” If you’ve never been to Santorini, it’s based on several hills. As I put all of my attention on not falling on my face while walking in 6-inch heels, he guided me to a secret location. I was confused, but too hungry to ask questions. Once we got there, the lady told us that there was a surprise and that we both had to be blindfolded.
Now this is where my mind began to wonder what was going on. She put the blindfold on “us,” and he supposedly guided me down the steps blindfolded himself. My heart was racing as I was thinking “Oh my God, what’s happening? Omg, is it happening?!” As I took the last step, I saw a little candle on the ground through the bottom of the blindfold. Yes, I was peeking just so I wouldn’t fall; I’m a total clutz. Lol. When the song “Middle” by DJ Snake started playing, I immediately had tears gushing down my face as he took my blindfold off. It was finally happening :). It was the most perfect proposal: just the two of us together. We were on this beautiful island, on a terrace overlooking the most amazing sunset over the Aegean Sea, with the sparkling city lights of Oía all around us.
He got down on one knee, and by then we were both in tears. Although he could barely get any words out, he finally said “I love you so much, will you marry me?” This moment will resonate with us forever. As I cried from pure happiness and love, I said yes and nodded my head instantly. Magical, it was purely magical.
My fairy-tale proposal was a dream come true.
