Faith and Keegan
How We Met
Keegan and I met on the Freshman move-in day our very first day of college. I was with my best friend and she suggested we go up and talk to the group of people he was with. We all introduced ourselves and I specifically remember us laughing about how unique Keegan’s last name was. Little did I know that in less than 4 years that would become my last name as well. After talking that night we met up the next day he invited me to roam the campus and find where our classes would be when school started in a few days. I thought he was cute, so I said yes. We went on our first adventure through the confusing hallways of our school and tried not to get lost. The next day he invited me to a small birthday party a few friends were throwing for him and after we all went to a coffee shop. At the coffee shop, I noticed he was trailing the air behind me no matter where I went. I got the sense he might like me, but I didn’t give it much thought.
We talked that night and hung out with friends the few days following, and a week from his birthday he asked me if I would go on a date with him. I was completely shocked but still said yes. Our first day was one of the craziest and beautiful moments of my life. Let’s just say his car wouldn’t start, so we got very creative. But after that, I felt that we just needed to be friends and get to know each other before we had feelings get involved or make any commitments. So, we hung out as friends and quickly realized how much fun we had together. After enjoying each other’s friendship for three months we decided to start dating on November 11, 2016. Every day since our love for the Lord and for each other has grown. We have witnessed first hand the power of keeping Christ first in our relationship and making purity a priority. We plan to continue seeking God’s and his kingdom together, rather than apart for the rest of our lives.
How They Asked
I woke up to the sound of rain on Christmas morning knowing little of what the day would hold besides the traditional opening of gifts and celebrating with family and friends. The night before, I was at a pajama party with friends and was completely unaware that my boyfriend had driven four hours to the airport, had flown halfway across the country to California, and had driven to my uncle’s house to stay the night preparing for what was to come of the next day. Ironically, I had the random thought come to mind to make his favorite meal, his mom’s enchiladas, for my family to try earlier that morning. Little did I know that my mom would take him some while I was at a party, and little did he know he would get to eat his favorite meal the night before one of the most memorable days of his life. In light of this cozy Christmas morning, I had decided to stay in pajamas as long as possible.
My mom kept on insisting and insisting that I get dressed because we were having guests over for breakfast, but since the guests were close family friends, I knew they wouldn’t mind my attire one bit. So, I stayed in pajamas and sat on the couch while my little sister began opening her presents. I then received a text from my boyfriend with a picture of the gift I had given him, unwrapped under his Christmas tree in Texas. He said “Thank you” and that he would call me soon. A few minutes later the doorbell rang and my mom asked me to get it. I first looked out the window to see who it was and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Standing 15 feet from the door, dressed in a suit, and romantically holding an umbrella in the pouring rain was my handsome boyfriend, Keegan. I screamed “WHAT!” and turned around to look at my family in utter shock.
They yelled, “Open the door!” and before they could say it a second time I ran out to hug him. A week before he had asked what I wanted for Christmas and I had joked saying, “All I Want For Christmas Is You….” since we had been apart for two weeks. So, I simply assumed he was fulfilling my Christmas wish at the moment, but then he stepped back and handed me the umbrella. He looked me in the eyes and said: “Faith, you are the one that I love….” He got down on one knee and it was like time had stopped. I was standing there looking into the eyes of my best friend knelt before me on the cold, wet ground with the largest smile and the most beautiful ring I had ever seen before. There I was, experiencing a moment I couldn’t have imagined any better as he said, “Will you marry me?” Although paralyzed by the spontaneity of the moment and the extreme joy running wild inside, I happened to get out a breathless “yes.” He stood up and we hugged.
I didn’t want to let go, but he still hadn’t put the ring on me. Looking down at that ring I not only saw a large, radiant, pure diamond, but I also saw the love and sacrifices he had made to earn that ring. I saw the late nights he worked being exhausted after a long day of classes. I saw the moment he told me he loved me for the first time. I saw when we first danced in the rain, when we first held hands, and when we first prayed over our relationship, dedicating every moment of it to the Lord. I saw the physical promise that I would always be his, and he would always be mine.
