How We Met
Cody and I grew up about 2 blocks away from each other, and our paths crossed many times throughout childhood. We both attended the same middle school and high school, but it wasn’t until our sophomore year of high school that we really got to know each other. We sat next to each other in history class, and spent most of our class time joking around (sorry, Mr. Orange!) A couple of months and a few mix CD’s later, Cody and I were pretty inseparable. On Valentine’s Day of 2010, he even got me a dozen roses with a note saying, “I know we’re not dating….yet…but I wanted to get you a little something to show how much I like you.”
A few days later, on February 19, 2010, he officially asked me to be his girlfriend! After high school, I made the tough decision to move by myself to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a professional career in ballet, and Cody went off to college back in Ohio. We made it through two years of long distance, with plenty of trips back and forth from Ohio to Tennessee. Eventually, I decided to move back closer to family (and Cody!) to finish my college degree. We were the couple that always knew we’d get married, we were just waiting for the perfect time. After I graduated in May 2017, I knew a proposal was coming…I just didn’t know when!
how they asked
Her version: For the third year in a row, Cody and I went on our annual road trip to Miatas at the Gap, a gathering of Mazda Miatas in Deal’s Gap, North Carolina. It’s a fun event centered around the curviest road in America, and about 500 Mazda Miata drivers attend each year from all around the country! Best of all, the area is surrounded by amazing views of the Smokey Mountains. On the third day of the trip, after enjoying a picnic lunch on top of the beautiful Fontana Dam, Cody and I headed to reconvene with friends and take a drive. Our friends suggested we check out a certain overlook before heading out, which I thought was pretty normal! Little did I know that Cody had scouted out the perfect spot for a proposal before we even got there. Again I was not expecting anything! As we got to the lookout, we could see a fantastic view of the Smokey Mountains, the Fontana Lake, and the lush forest.
It was beautiful. Some of our friends were joking around and wanted pictures in front of the view, so we took a few. Finally, Cody asked if I wanted to take a picture. After our picture, Cody took my hands and said, (totally nonchalantly) “I got a question for you…” and the next thing I knew, he was on one knee with the most gorgeous ring in a little black box.
I was stunned. So stunned that I thought he was joking! I said, “Are you serious?” to which he laughed and said, “Yeah! I love you!” Of course, I said yes! It was a whirlwind of emotions, and luckily, our friends took wonderful pictures the entire time so we can always remember that moment.
I was so happy to experience the proposal of my dreams in such a picturesque setting. It was perfect!
