How We Met
We met in September 2012 when I was a freshman in college and he was a junior at a University Ministry event. I was oblivious and he was already in love. He added me on Facebook the next day, messaged me and said, “Hey we are friends!! So guess what? We have the same birthday…” At first I thought it was a cheesy pick-up line, but after some research it was true–we were born on the same day, October 24th, just three years apart. Fast forward to about a year later, I finally agreed to go out with him.
How They Asked
Our faith has always been very important to us, so it makes sense that he chose the place he did to propose. It was Christmas Eve, and we were getting ready to attend Midnight Mass at our parish, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Aurora, IL. I had recently joined the church choir and was preparing for my first performance that night. His parents and siblings were planning to meet us there. By the time Mass was over it was about 1:30 in the morning. His father’s hobby is photography, so it wasn’t unusual that he wanted to take pictures of us on Christmas in front of the Nativity Scene. Since other families were waiting to take family pictures, I started to walk away to let them have an opportunity. Miguel grabbed my hand and pulled me back, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him! I, of course, said yes! Those who were gathered around applauded and cheered while I hugged my new fiance. We ran into our priest, Fr. Mark, afterwards and he gave us a special blessing for our engagement. Everything was beautiful and felt just right.
