How We Met

I moved from NJ to D.C. in August of 2013 for my job, and it was my first time living on my own. My whole life was in NJ, so it was an exciting but scary time for me. I’m such a big family oriented person and I typically spend every holiday with them but this was my first New Year’s Eve without them. I did get a pleasant surprise as my one girlfriend from home came down to spend NYE with me, so I was just so happy to have a friend with me, I wasn’t really focused on anything else. We decided to go to Oya Restaurant and Lounge to bring in the New Year and I remember being on the dance floor and someone dancing next to me, somehow turned someone dancing with me. The song changed and I looked back and it was Ermias, (but we did not fall in love on the dance floor) as I quickly ended the 2nd dance, giving him the line “I’m getting tired, maybe another song.” He gave me a smile and told me he was holding me to another dance, but I shrugged it off. As my friend and I were getting ready to call it a night, Ermias and his friend came up to us and we chatted for a bit. Honestly, though, I was tired and hardly listening to anything he said until I heard him ask for my number. I went in my bag and gave him my business card, thinking he would take the hint, but then in return, he gave me his business card back.

Engagement Proposal Ideas in Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, Mexico

So we met on NYE, but on January 10th he sent me a friend request on LinkedIn LOL! I sent him a message and he took about an hour or so to reply back, but he told me he didn’t know you could message people on LinkedIn so all he saw from my message was the subject line saying “hey.” We exchanged a few messages, turned email, turned texts and we went on our first date on January 11th. We first played pool at Rocket Bar, grabbed something to eat a Clydes, then played games and had drinks at Penn Social. I accidentally left my phone in his car, which was fate telling me to actually get to know this guy. Then we had another date that following Monday, tacos and board games, then that Friday he took me to the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper for dinner and live band playing Mo-town Music. We had our first dance, which he always jokes with me about it lasting maybe 15 seconds since we’ve been drinking wine and I wanted to stop spinning. We also had our first kiss that night, and although he had more activities planned for the evening, he took me home and we spent the night talking on the phone until I fell asleep. The rest is history :)

Erika and Ermias's Engagement in Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, Mexico

How They Asked

Other than being a full-time Recruiter & Researcher for SearchWide Global, I’m also a Washington Redskins Cheerleader. I’ve been on the team for 5 years now and this is my 2nd year as Captain. Ermias has been there since the very beginning. He was there when I first auditioned and was cut at finals. He knows how hard I worked to be on the team and how much I love the team. He’s my biggest supporter. Every year our team goes on our annual photo shoot and it’s awesome that our friends and family can come too. Ermias was supposed to come but he was finishing up finals for grad school and he had to go on a last minute trip to California for work, so things just didn’t work out. He dropped me off at the airport at 4 AM on Sunday and we talked all day when I arrived in Mexico, so things were pretty normal. We also chatted most of the day on Monday, however that was the day I had my photo shoot so I didn’t have my phone most of the day. Photo shoots can be very long, hair and makeup at 3 am, photo shoots until sunset…

I finished my individual shoot and was getting ready for my Captains photo shoot but I noticed things kept getting delayed. I kept thinking to myself, how many times do we need to take the same picture and then our Director and the Photographer had us switching locations. It was a lot of fun, however, we were all tired and ready to get out of the gowns and eat dinner. We always have a team meeting at the end of the day so we can talk about the next day agenda, but my Director seemed to be taking forever to start the meeting, then after the meeting, she requested to speak with the Captains.

While we were waiting, I texted Ermias a few times but my messages weren’t going through, which was odd. I’m not going to lie, I was kind of annoyed he wasn’t replying back. But then our Director asked us if we could take one more group photo and at that point, I took my shoes off, ate a burger that wiped away my lipstick, but I was going to be a team player, so of course, I agreed.

Little did I know what was about to happen… We turn the corner and they decided they didn’t like that area, so we moved to another location and I can see my teammates from the distance, but I didn’t think anything of it because we always come to each other shoot to watch and support. Well, as I walk up, my man turns the corner (like he’s on the Bachelor) and I was in utter shock. I couldn’t figure out what to say, so I just said “Hi” about 5 times and asked him what he was doing here… he said some words, but I honestly couldn’t hear anything he said because I started hyperventilating, then… he dropped down on one knee and I lost it… it was waterworks galore. I hope he asked me to marry him because I know I said YES. I leaned in to give him a hug and a kiss and I couldn’t even see the ring because of all the tears. I turned around and my teammates were there cheering us on!
