Erica and Salvador
How We Met
Sal and I were born and raised only forty-five minutes away from one another – although it took us twenty some years later to meet.
Our love story began after a WVU football game while we were obtaining our post-graduate degrees. I was in my second year of law school and Sal was in his first year of his master’s program. We had each started out that October Saturday in 2014 as any good WVU students would – tailgating for the biggest football game of the season! Although we had gone to different tailgates and attended the game separately, it was only a matter of time until we ran into each other that day.
As fate would have it, a few hours and a Mountaineer win later, we finally met at a mutual friend’s apartment during a post-game celebration. At that party we both laughed at how persistent our friend was that everyone get together after the game and how we both were in our pajamas when we got the call that we HAD to come over. This was only the beginning of the conversation that led to our realization that we had shared the same group of friends without knowing it for the most part of our lives. We ended up talking all night and were so caught up in conversation that we missed the celebratory “riot” on high street (a regular occurrence after a big win in Morgantown) which was happening right outside of where we were. Fast forward from that night, and we’ve been talking ever since! After two and a half years of dating, Sal popped the question and I happily said YES!
how they asked
On a random Tuesday in July, my twin sister asked me if my boyfriend, Sal, and I would like to go on a double date with her and her husband that upcoming weekend. I of course said yes and asked the basic details such as where, when, and what time. My sister replied that she felt like dressing up and suggested we go to one of the nicest restaurants in Pittsburgh that overlooks the whole city. She knew this was my favorite restaurant so I could hardly turn down her double date invitation. That Saturday we got ready together and arrived at the restaurant. Everything was off to a great start, we had great food and drinks and were leaving the restaurant when my sister suggested that we take some pictures at the outside overlook which was right across the street from the restaurant. When we got to the overlook there were people everywhere and we patiently waited for our turn to get up to the front where you can see the city from the best angle.
While waiting, my sister suggested that we walk to a path that was just to the left of the overlook where we would have some privacy and could take pictures with the sunset in the background. I volunteered to take a few of my sister and her husband and then it was Sal and I’s turn! After the first picture was taken I asked my sister how it was, she didn’t reply so I looked over at Sal and there he was on his knee asking me to marry him with the sun setting and the city in the background. I was so surprised that I stood there staring at him for a few seconds until I yelled “YES what just happened!”
After the shock, happiness, and a few tears were shed, Sal told me that our families were waiting for us at a restaurant downtown to celebrate. We hopped in the car and then walked toward the restaurant. As soon as we walked in I noticed all of Sal and I’s best friends and immediate family waiting for us with celebratory drinks in hand! Not only had he planned the perfect proposal, but also an engagement party to follow with all of our favorite people. It was a night that I will never forget!
