How We Met
Evan and I met in college at Florida State University. It was my freshman year and his junior year. After one of my classes, I went to my friend Emerson’s apartment with my best friend, Stephanie, to hangout. As we were there, this handsome guy with blonde hair and the most beautiful blue eyes walks right on in with a hoodie on, hair disheveled, and cracked open a beer at 9 am and I immediately felt giddy. I thought to myself “Oh no, Erica, this one seems like trouble”. I remember leaving and telling Steph how into that boy I was. The next few weeks, we began hanging out and getting to know each other. He was so funny, kind, and respectful and the more I got to know him, the more I liked him. He asked me to go to his fraternity formal with him and I accepted. March 28th of 2015, he asked me to be his girlfriend and four and a half years later, I’m still madly in love with the boy that cracked open a beer at 9 am.
How They Asked
Evan and I love to travel. We’ve been to so many places some of our friends call us “the traveling couple”. I have been dying to go to Europe for so long. Evan’s mom wanted to celebrate her 50th birthday by going on a Mediterranean cruise and invited Evan and I as well as Evan’s younger siblings. I know my parents love to travel so I thought I should ask if they wanted to go too! I wasn’t sure if they would be able to but to my pleasant surprise, they said yes!! A few months before the trip, Evan had a really bad injury playing flag football. He fractured hi kneecap, femur, and tore some ligaments. We were so worried he wouldn’t be able to make the trip.
Evan even stayed with my parents for a while so he could get the care he needed (my dad’s a doctor). After many doctor’s visits and countless physical therapy appointments, Evan went from not being able to walk to limping to full-on walking! I knew he was in pain still but I know he was happy that he could get around on his own. July 25th, 2019 came around the corner quicker than I expected and we were off to Venice, Italy! The first day we explored the city, ate some amazing food, and relaxed (jet lag had me feeling some type of way).
Evan had told me that his mom planned a family photoshoot for her birthday…I thought it was kind of weird but I didn’t think too much of it because his family is pretty extra. We got ready and headed to a beautiful church called the San Giorgio Maggiore. Once we got to the church we waited for the photographer and took some group photos and then Evan said he wanted some photos just us. So we stood by the water and as I am standing next to Evan posing for the photographer, Evan starts talking to me.
He says “You know I love you, right?” and I said “I love you too”…then he says “Do you want to spend the rest of your life with me?”…my heart dropped in that moment. He reaches in his pocket and pulls out the most beautiful brown box and I immediately start sobbing (ugly cry alert). He gets down on his broken knee, not once, but twice. The first time to ask for my hand and I immediately said yes and hugged him and the second time to put the most beautiful oval diamond ring on my finger.
Little did I know, he had asked my parents for my hand when he was staying with them during his knee injury recovery, went and bought the ring with my mom by his side, and had his mom plan the photographer for us. The rest of the trip was magical celebrating our engagement and his mom’s birthday. It was such a blessing to spend our time with the people I love. July 26th, 2019, will be a memory to last a lifetime.
