Emilyrose and Chris
How We Met
I went to an all-girls high school and Chris went to an all-boys high school, which was also my high school’s brother school. I played softball in high school and Chris played baseball. We met in early February of our senior year in high school when we were set up as prom dates by my sister and her friend on Chris’s baseball team. Turns out we got way more than we expected! We hit it off and “officially” started dating in April 2011. Chris had plans to go to Muhlenberg College and I had plans to go to Wellesley College, so in August we started a 4-year long distance relationship. Right before we left for school, Chris told me that he was going to marry me someday.
As an 18 year old dating the first boy I truly ever loved, I remember being nervous and excited all at the same time, hoping that he was right. Fast forward five years later to 2016…
how they asked
I had planned on asking Emilyrose to marry me a few months later than I actually did, but I bought the ring with my parents two weeks before and I just couldn’t wait any longer. I knew at 17 years old that she was the girl that I was going to marry. We had been dating for almost five years, endured a long distance relationship and finally we were back home, spending as much time as possible together. She is my everything, and I knew that I could’t wait a second longer to make her mine forever. Every Sunday we go to Emilyrose’s grandma’s house for an Italian dinner with her parents and sister and all of her aunts, uncles and cousins. Because of this, I wanted to ask her on a Sunday, so following the proposal we could share the news in person with our families.
I knew it would mean so much to her because family is a huge part of our lives and it would make the day even more special and unforgettable. So, although I hadn’t exactly planned on proposing on this date, I chose Sunday, January 17th 2016. I had been looking for the perfect Sunday, and that Sunday just felt right; it seemed like the perfect day to start the rest of our lives together. After we both got home from mass, I drove over to Emilyrose’s house. As I was driving to her house it start snowing; I was hoping it would snow long enough so I could propose while snow was still falling.
When I got there, we hung around the table with her parents and sister, but after a while I asked her if she wanted to go for a ride with me. We always joke about how much time we spend in the car driving together, so asking for a drive was not unusual. When we got in the car, she asked me where we were going. I told her that I was taking her on a hike. Being former athletes, we love doing active things like hiking, running, lifting, and biking. But she kept laughing and asking me why we were going for a hike while it was snowing out. I told her that I felt adventurous and I thought it would be fun. Luckily, she agreed. I took Emilyrose to Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange NJ because it has an incredible view of the New York City skyline.
We drove up to the top of the reservation, and looked at the skyline for a little, but as the snow came down harder the skyline got foggy and hard to see. I told Emily rose that I wanted to show her something special on one of the trails, so we walked toward the hiking area together, holding hands so we wouldn’t slip on the ice and snow. We walked on the trail, over a bridge with a waterfall area and up to a cliff that overlooked the stream. We were talking and laughing throughout the hike; it felt like time was standing still. I had never seen something so beautiful, between the skyline, the scenery and of course, Emily rose. After a little while, we decided to head back to the car. Emily rose started walking a few steps in front of me, and I tapped her on the shoulder.
When she turned around, I was on one knee with the ring in my hand. I told her that I couldn’t imagine spending another day without her by my side, that she was my best friend and first love and then I asked her to marry me. I was so nervous that I can hardly remember what I said, but she said yes and it was better than anything I could have imagined. We stood there in the snow enjoying the moment.
I remember thinking to myself, that I couldn’t wait to spend every moment from now until forever with the love of my life and my best friend.
