How We Met
Ryan and I met a little over two years ago, at work. I had been working at our company for a little over a year when he was hired. Everyone in the office our age would go to lunch together, so slowly, I got to know him. When I realized I really liked him, I decided to learn more and turned lunchtime more into interrogation time (in a fun way!). With our other coworkers, we’d talk about our biggest fears, our favorite vacations, our hobbies. We found we had a common interest in one particular artist – Kelly Clarkson. She was actually having a concert in our city around his birthday. I suggested he and another coworker and I spontaneously go last minute. The other coworker bailed (as I had expected) and it turned into the best first date!
How They Asked
Ryan and I have been in a long-distance relationship for a little over a year and a half – him in California and myself in Massachusetts. We determined that 2021 was going to be the year that we officially closed the distance and moved on to our next adventure. We planned our year of trips back and forth, with the intent of closing distance at the end of the year. This past Christmas, he had gifted me with a trip to Sedona, Arizona for our upcoming anniversary in March. I flew out to California, and we road-tripped our way to Arizona.
I had planned on hiking the majority of our trip, and spending some much-needed time with him! Little did I know, he had some other plans up his sleeve. On the morning of the proposal, we had planned to hike all morning, but woke up with 20-degree temperatures and snow! We scrapped the hiking plans and ended up enjoying some time in the apartment we were in watching a movie, while we waited for the sun to come out and warm things up.
He had suggested that go hike to a place he had been as a child with his family for sunset. I am an absolute sucker for a good sunset, so when the sun came out and it warmed up marginally, I put on my hiking boots and fleece, and got ready to go. Meanwhile, he put on jeans and a nice quarter-zip sweater, but I didn’t even think anything of it! Off we went, as he directed me to drive towards a certain hiking trail.
About 2 miles away from the trailhead, the paved road turned into red dirt, and I couldn’t imagine how his family had found this place when he was a kid. We finally got to a parking lot and the trailhead and started on the hike. He had told me it wouldn’t take long and we’d be by the creak and Cathedral Rock in no time. Halfway down the path, he veered off and stared beelining out of sight ahead of me.
I was confused, but he had said he remembered it from when he was a kid. I followed, and we came out to this beautiful rock on a creek, and I heard him ask me to take my mask off, and I looked up and he was down on one knee in front of me. Little did I know, he had hired a photographer, set up a picnic with roses and my favorite snack, and was following a pin to the location the whole time!!
