Emily and Justin

Emily and Justin's Engagement in On the Santa Monica pier in California

How We Met

Justin and I met four years ago, when I had just completed my sophomore year of college. We are both actors and had been hired for a summer production of the musical “West Side Story.” He was playing Tony and I was dancing in the ensemble. As one does, I saw the cast list and right away started Facebook stalking. I came upon Justin and was immediately smitten. His eyes were (and still are) the most incredible eyes that I have ever seen. What I later came to find out was that he had been doing the same thing, and felt the same way about me!

On our first day of the contract, the entire cast met up to get dinner and get to know each other. As I was walking into the restaurant with a few friends, we ran into a boy, Justin. It was love at first sight. Justin likes to describe the night we first met as “electric in a way that he couldn’t describe even if he wanted to.”

I decided right then and there that I was going to sit next to “the really cute boy playing Tony and get him to fall in love with me.” And I did just that. Over the next month, we both fell head over heels in love with each other. Four years later, two and a half of those long distance, we live together in NYC with our puppy and thank God every day for that summer in Meredith, NH.

How They Asked

Recently, Justin and I made the huge decision to move from NYC to LA so I could attend grad school at UCLA. In preparation for the move, we traveled to California to find an apartment and get to know the city and the West Coast a bit better. While we were there we would also be celebrating our 4 year anniversary!

Now, I knew Justin was going to propose at some point soon, but I had completely talked myself out of the idea that it would happen in California. I had previously convinced myself that it was going to happen at an earlier date, and was crushed when it didn’t, so I refused to do that to myself again.

But back to our anniversary. We were celebrating in Santa Monica, we had a beautiful hotel, and reservations at an incredible restaurant overlooking the water. After one of the best dinners I have ever had, we decided to walk all the way to the end of the Santa Monica Pier. It was sunset and the views of the mountains over the water were absolutely stunning. When we got to the end we found a quiet spot on the end of the pier and just spent a few minutes admiring everything around us.

That’s when Justin turned to me and started to talk about the past 4 years we had spent together and how much we have grown together and how excited he is for our future in LA and beyond. It took a few minutes, and a few “is this really happenings?” for me to realize what was going on but once I did I burst into tears. I honestly don’t remember much, but I will never forget the moment when Justin got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!

After I stopped uncontrollably sobbing and double-checked to make sure I had actually gotten the word yes out, we called all of our family and closest friends who had been waiting up to hear the news! We then went to a nearby restaurant to toast to the start of our new life together. It was just the two of us, no pictures, no people, just us. And the most perfect proposal I could have ever dreamed of. I can’t wait to marry the love of my life!
