Emily and Jamie
how they asked
Jamie and I had been long-distance for years. One of the fun things about long-distance is that it always feels like a vacation whenever you get to see each other. After two years of mini-vacations, we planned to go back to one of our original spots for our birthdays: Hot Springs, Arkansas. We recreated a few of our favorite memories, including going to a fully-operating crystal mine where you can dig through huge mounds of dirt and take home whatever you find.
After about an hour of getting dirty, we took a break. While I was getting us water, Jamie was secretly consulting with some strangers nearby. Once I got back, he decided to “try out a new spot” over the hill where I couldn’t see him. A few minutes later, he called me over to see something he had found. I climbed over the hill to see what he was looking at, but there he was, down on one knee. He says he was so nervous, all he could say was “Will you marry me?”. I ripped off my gloves as he presented me my late grandmother’s ring. Surrounded by strangers clapping for us, we cried and hugged for what felt like an eternity. It was perfect.
