How We Met
We met in University in our last year. We had both gone to the campus pub with friends and it was Country Night, which none of our friends liked. He ended up dancing with me all night long, line dancing and twirling the night away – and I loved it! We had a blast and ended up staying up all night until 6 in the morning just talking and having the best time. We just “clicked” and got along so well. It was one of those surreal movie moments where strangers can talk for hours and never meet again.
I honestly never thought we’d see each other again, but somehow he got my number from a friend and away we went, texting and hanging out, singing along to country songs and getting to know each other over the year.
Somewhere in there we discovered a ton of crazy coincidences… we lived on the same residence floor in our third year and actually met on the first day, both walking away thinking the other was cute and hoping we’d run into each other but we never did. I found photos of myself and friends at parties, and he was in the background of the shots. We had crossed paths and flirted on random nights over the last year, but never progressed past a quick chat and it always was cut short before we ever could exchange numbers or even get names. It seemed like we finally got our serendipitous ending just when it was meant to be.
Unfortunately we lived in separate home towns so when school ended that year we had to give long distance a shot. After 2 years of visits every other weekend, 3 hour trains, and a lot of “I Miss You” phone calls, I left my job and we moved to a city where he worked. We love our condo and I am so glad I made that leap of faith. We’ve lived here for nearly two years and are now happily engaged, thanking our lucky stars for Country Pub Night, friends who don’t dance, and all the chance meetings that led to this life.
how they asked
We took a little getaway to Niagara Falls for a Christmas Ice Skating show, and a few weeks before the trip we heard about the Festival of Lights, with over 8km of light displays and decorations. On our first night away after our show, we walked around the first part of the lights in the park, admiring the beautiful trees lit up in the darkness. We took some photos and had a lovely romantic stroll, and Gary kept asking me which tree was my favourite. As we looped around the park on our way back to the hotel we stopped in front of the biggest Christmas tree display. It had all the colours, was the tallest one, and the only tree in the park with a star on top. It was right in front of that magical background that he got down on one knee and asked me to be his forever and marry him.
I couldn’t tell you if we stood there for 5 minutes or an hour, I was so overjoyed with love, happiness, and of course lots of tears. Since the park was dark at night and only the lights of the displays were around, it felt like we were the only two people on the planet. It was the most special and magical way to start the holiday season, and start the next chapter of our lives together.
The big giant one with the star!
