Emily and Brian
How We Met
Brian and I met at the gym. One of my great friends had befriended Brian when he got a membership – as time went on, I continued to notice him. Brian was different than most of the men in my gym – he’s humble and sticks to himself. I asked our mutual friend about him and that’s how things got rolling. After introducing himself to me (clearly our friend put in the word I was interested), we began making small talk. One evening as Brian was getting ready to leave the gym, I worked up the courage to ask him on a date.
Our first date was Monday, January 25. He picked me up and went for sushi and canollis, two of my favorite things. Our conversation flowed so easily, it felt like we had known one another for years. He was a perfect gentleman and we made plans to get together two days later. I called my sister after that first date and said, “I’m going to marry that man”. I did however find out that Friday, Brian was moving to Florida for two months to teach at a water ski school. As bummed as I was, I knew we had the next four days to try and spend time together.
So, we got together on Wednesday and talked for 4 hours – before he asked if he could kiss me, which I obviously said yes, as I had been waiting all night! As he left that evening, we decided we would get together Thursday and we did – another 4 hours of talking and getting to know one another. We said goodnight and Brian stated, “we’ll keep in touch”, to which I said, “don’t act like we aren’t going to talk tomorrow!”. This was Brian, before I got to know him – shy, awkward and didn’t always say the most appropriate thing. So we promised to talk often and thus began our relationship.
The following two months weren’t exactly hard, but exciting. We were able to get to know one another on a completely emotional and intellectual level without any physical pressures. Brian and I texted every single day and had FaceTime dates every Sunday evening for 4-5 hours. I sent him care packages with homemade baked goods and other little things. He sent me flowers with hilarious notes and a book about something we both found a love for. It felt like an old school-turned modern courtship. At the end of the two months, we reunited and the rest is truly history. I knew from our first date we would spend our lives together and look at us now!
how they asked
Lake Dunmore in Vermont is a place Brian grew up vacationing at throughout his childhood as well as living there for 3 summers during college. The firs time he brought me, I felt an instant connection to the lake. The minute we arrive, I can feel my stress disappear and my heart feel at peace. So we spend as much time as possible there as this place obviously means a lot to us both.
This was our view from the top of that peak!
Saturday morning, Brian decided we were going to hike Rattlesnake Point, although it had been raining for days. Right as the sun came out, we decided to start the hike. About 20 minutes in, we were struggling to breathe as it was humid and very buggy. Due to the rain, our legs and feet were completely drenched in water and mud. We were walking through marshlands and newly formed rivers all the way up. At one point I even said, “this isn’t fun anymore!”. Brian continued to tell me, ‘it would all be worth it to see this view’. We had talked about this hike forever so we were going to finish. Over an hour later, we reached the top and my irritation disappeared as we overlooked the entire lake and into the Adirondacks. The view was absolutely stunning; I felt so happy to be up there.
The words beautiful, peaceful and worth it would be an understatement. We had a snack & let our shoes dry before setting up the camera to take a picture, something we do every hike. After some commentary about the laughably miserable time we’d just had, Brian turned to me with love in his eyes. He told me how much he loved me, he knew he wanted to spend his life with me from the start, and that he wanted to take care of me and cherish me for the rest of his life. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
Obviously, I said ‘yes of course’! I am so grateful and feel so blessed to have a man that loves me so deeply, tells me this every day and makes sure I know how important I am. Every single minute of every day with Brian is like living a fairy-tale, he is my dream come true and the light of my life. I cannot wait to spend my life with my best friend and the best person I’ve ever known!!
