Emily and Brandon

How We Met

I knew who Brandon was almost my entire life. We grew up in the same town and he played basketball and baseball with my older brother. My dad was even his baseball coach for a year or two. As kids and teenagers, we had mutual friends and knew of one another, but we never actually met. We even went to the same college and our paths never crossed. In 2015, Brandon got out of the military and moved from North Carolina back to the town in California where we grew up. A mutual friend invited us both out one night. We went to a dueling piano bar, had a little too much to drink, and I hopped up

on his lap to take this picture. He kept insisting that he was going to take me on a date and take me out to dinner. I thought he wasn’t serious and just drank too much and continually told him no. The next morning I came to my senses, sent him a text message, and the rest is history!

how they asked

On a Friday night, Brandon & I flew up to the San Francisco Bay Area from our home in San Diego for my cousin’s wedding weekend. Brandon’s mom, Sharyn, picked us up from the airport to give us a ride back to her house where we’d be staying. Somehow the two of them behaved completely normal on the drive home & I thought nothing out of the ordinary was happening. Sharyn told us she was going to have us drop her off at a local restaurant where she was meeting her girlfriends (who she meets with pretty much every Friday evening; so this was totally believable!) little did I know when we dropped her off & Brandon hopped in the driver’s seat, she was running around the corner to hop in the car with my family to race up to her house. Brandon stopped at the gas station on the way home to buy them some time, and we drove up to the house. We walked into candles & rose petals EVERYWHERE leading out to the deck where there was roses, candles, hanging lights, music playing & a table for two set up with a steak dinner for the two of us.

Brandon dropped to one knee, asked me to marry him, and I said YES! The lovely Cathy Breslow (a family friend & incredible photographer) popped out & took some pictures while we enjoyed our meal. Unbeknownst to me, some of our family & friends were hiding in the back bedroom watching this go down, and they scurried sneakily out of the house while we had dinner. After some time alone, our families showed up for dessert & celebrating! It was absolutely perfect & everything I’ve ever dreamed of. I’m so grateful for Brandon’s thought & effort put into this & for our families helping him pull off the surprise. Also, we are so glad to have our dog, Willie, making a guest appearance in some of our photos!
