Emily and Alex
How We Met
Timing really is everything and that couldn’t have been any more true for Alex and me. It was kind of like all the stars had finally aligned. After college, I got a job in HR at an architecture firm, the same place where Alex got a job in the accounting dept. We were hired within days of each other. The first time we ever met in person was at our firm’s new hire orientation but it wasn’t until 9 months later that we actually spoke for the first time. About 6 months into working there my maid of honor told me that one of her boyfriend’s friends worked in the accounting dept. at my firm and that he had a huge crush on me. That’s when I found out Alex had been good friends with my maid of honors boyfriend since high school. I couldn’t believe we had never met before but I guess it just wasn’t the right time yet. I definitely thought Alex was good looking but at the time I wasn’t interested in anyone since I was still trying to move on from someone else. But then fate stepped in. I had reached a point where I was ready to move on from this other person and be open to something new. To celebrate I went out with my girlfriends. Ironically Alex just happened to be out at the same time and at the same bar. He happened to be walking by right as my friend tripped and fell. It was that fall that made him notice I was at the bar. He said hi, got me a drink, and the rest is history. He was there on the night I decided to open my heart back up and he has had my heart ever since. We could’ve run into each other so many times before that night but we truly believe we came into each other’s lives at exactly the right time.
how they asked
I knew Alex was the man I was going to marry very early on. My dad passed away suddenly about 4 months into our relationship. My dad and I were extremely close and losing him was devastating. Alex stuck with me and my family and helped in every way imaginable. I knew right then and there that he was the one. I think other people knew we were meant to be too because they kept asking us when we were getting married.
I always had the same response, “2018.” I don’t know why I just felt like that was the right time. I should’ve known Alex wouldn’t be able to wait long though. His parents have a New Year’s Eve party every year and we’ve been trying to save money for a house so I didn’t think anything of it when he suggested we invite our friends to his house instead of going out.
Everything seemed normal that night. We had some drinks, played a game then everyone gathered in the living room to countdown the new year. The ball dropped and I kissed Alex and hugged my friends and family. When the celebrations were done I turned around and there was Alex down on one knee.
In front of our family and closest friends he asked me to marry him and through the happiest of tears I said yes. It was everything I could’ve asked for and more. It was the best day of my life and I know my dad was there with us smiling and watching from heaven.
