How We Met
Cody and I met through Twitter in June 2012. I saw a tweet from Josh Gracin that had a memorial video of a sweet girl that had unfortunately passed away. One month before, a classmate of mine had passed away the same way. The video was attached to Cody’s Twitter account. I followed him, he followed back then I sent a message. I told him I was sorry for the loss of his friend and if he needed anyone to talk to, my inbox was free. He messaged me back saying thank you, we talked about the people we lost then began asking questions about one another. The conversation never ended.
Fast forward to December 2012 and we were getting ready to meet in person. Cody is from South Carolina and I’m from Connecticut. I was celebrating Christmas with my family in Wilmington, North Carolina which was only two and a half hours from Cody. We decided to meet at the river walk in downtown Wilmington. Cody and his friend Kenny met me and basically the entire side of my Mom’s family downtown. We walked the boardwalk holding hands the whole time. That was the spot we said, “I love you”, for the first time in person.
We spent the next four years dating long distance while we were attending college. We would see each other over spring break, summer break and Christmas break. We were always lucky enough to have one week together but couldn’t wait until we didn’t have to catch a flight home. After Cody graduated from college, he moved up to Connecticut to start our future together.
how they asked
In August 2018, before the school year started back up, my Mom, sister and I were again visiting family in Wilmington. Cody went to visit his family in South Carolina before his school year started back up again as well. Tuesday morning my sister said we were going downtown to take “cute pictures” on the river walk. She told me we didn’t have enough cute pictures together as I’m known to take silly pictures rather than more serious ones. I put a dress on, which was fine but then I wanted to wear my converse but hadn’t packed them, so I was bummed about that. We got downtown and stopped in at Wake n Bake, a donut shop downtown. They had a donut on the menu I had seen which had potato chips on it. Unfortunately, by the time we got there, it was sold out – again I was bummed. I said to my Mom and sister, “these things always happen in three so what’s next?” Little did I know what was actually happening.
Cody had told me that morning he was helping his brother move something into his dorm room at college so he was waking up early and wouldn’t be able to text me for a few hours while he was helping. I was walking down the boardwalk when all of a sudden, Cody was standing there. I had no idea what he was doing there! The first thing I said was, “Hey! What are you doing here?!” Without missing a beat he responded with, “I’m here to take pictures with you.” I was still clueless but kept walking towards him. Honestly, I didn’t know what was happening until he got down on his knee and even then I was thinking, is this really happening?!
My Mom was able to take a video and get pictures while my sister was FaceTiming my Dad who was at work. I could not have asked for a more thoughtful proposal with the help of my family.
