How We Met
We met in college & instantly had a connection. We became friends & got to know each other for a year and a half. I always explained to him as a guy version of me because we are similar in many ways & our personalities complement each other very well. We realized we both had the same feelings for each other & decided to take our relationship to the next level. We moved in together soon after & it’s been the best year and a half of my life.
How They Asked
Rockaway Beach was always a special place for Montana & his family. Throughout our relationship, he had taken me to the coast several times. Last summer, Montana told me he loved me for the first time on the beach in Rockaway, so it was always a special place for us. I thought that this was going to be a typical beach weekend: relaxing wearing sweatpants, crabbing off the coast, & having a bonfire on the beach. Little did I know, Montana and his family had a full night planned. They told me that we were going to a happy hour at a restaurant & to bring “beach fancy” clothes.
Two days before we left, Montana’s mom’s best friend took me to get my nails done—little did I know Montana wanted to make sure my nails looked good for the big event. We got to the beach on a Friday night & had dinner with his family. The next morning we woke up early to go crabbing. Then we went on a walk around town & explored some of the shops. Everything felt super normal. My understanding of the plan for the night was that we were going to do the bonfire on Rockaway Beach around sunset & then head over to get drinks. Montana’s mom & uncle headed over to the beach early to “set up.” I thought that meant they were getting the fire started before we got there so we weren’t freezing but I didn’t think anything of it. We got to the beach 30 minutes before the sun went down—if you know me, I was excited about the pictures on the beach with a sunset.
We spent 20 minutes trying to get the perfect picture (I’m picky), all while Montana was trying to walk me down to the water where the proposal was set up. He finally got me to walk down there. As we approached, there was an aisle lined with glass jars & candles. I blurted out “it looks like someone just got engaged or married.” I still was not aware of the special moment. At the end of the aisle, I was surprised to see a letter with my name on it. Montana handed it to me & told me to read the entire letter.
When I was done, he held my hands and told me how much he loves me. Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. By this time, I was crying & hysterical—I couldn’t believe that this moment I had dreamed of was actually happening. I easily said yes as he placed the ring on my finger. The rest of the night was spent with his family, reminiscing on our relationship & the future we have ahead of us. It was the most magical night!
