Elizabeth and Shaun
How We Met
I met Shaun my freshman year of college at the University of Missouri. Although I can’t remember the exact moment we met, Shaun can remember it perfectly (and he loves to tease me about it constantly!) We had mutual friends and saw each other around all the time. We were also in the Wind Ensemble together. I played the clarinet and he was in the percussion section. Near the end of the year, we bonded over our mutual love of House of Cards and watched about 6 episodes in a row together. A few weeks later, we traveled to Italy with the Wind Ensemble. We spent 10 days touring the country, going to the Amalfi Coast, Rome, Pompeii, Lake Como and more.
I was still pretty shy around Shaun, but we hung out on the trip. One night in Rome, he came to my hotel room and asked if he could talk to me. I said yes, and he suggested we go up to a little balcony on the roof. From there, we could see beautiful buildings and trees lit up at night. We talked about anything and everything until it started to sprinkle. It was then that we shared our first kiss—on the roof in Rome, in the rain. (I made a very bad joke after that it was just like the Lizzie McGuire movie!) A few weeks after we got back from the trip, we started officially dating, and the rest is history!
how they asked
Following my college graduation, I accepted a job offer in St. Louis. We planned to move there together over the summer. Shaun popped the question on the day we moved into our new apartment, which also happened to be our 3-year anniversary. After we finished bringing in all of the boxes and furniture, he told me he was going to put some of the empty boxes in the car. I didn’t think anything of it and kept organizing a shelf. When he came back up, he wrapped his arms around me and said “You forgot a box in the car.”
When I turned to him, he slipped a tiny velvet box in my hand and got down on one knee. He asked me to spend my life with him in the place where we were starting the next chapter of our lives together. It was so simple and yet so meaningful to us. We sat in awe for awhile just letting it all sink in. We went to Forest Park and to one of our favorite restaurants (Rigazzi’s on the Hill). It was the perfect first day in St. Louis!
