Elaine and Duane

How We Met: Julie, a close friend of Elaine’s, brought Elaine to a wedding she was attending, and Jeff, A close friend of mine brought me to the same wedding. Us four single people all sat at the same table having never met each other before. We all spent all evening talking away. A month later Jeff and Julie were dating. Several months later Elaine and I had our first date at Izakaya Tomo. We talked for several hours and had some scrumptious food! We started eating at many Japanese restaurants around town, became inseparable and it progressed to eating at many restaurants in Japan. Which evolved to a trip to Japan to experience the real thing. I am now a sushi chef at Izakaya tomo where we had our first date.

how they asked: In October I surprised Elaine with a couple’s photo shoot in Granville Island. We had always talked about having shoots in different places we travel, so Elaine thought this was a cute gift. What Elaine didn’t know was that I had been planning a surprise engagement proposal for months and had Vivid Moments Photographers to document the event midway through the photoshoot.

I took Elaine to a neat place near the water’s edge and said I had been geocaching at this exact spot before, and wanted to show her what I had hidden under some rocks. I surprised her by taking out a jar of candy rings with a note in it. As Elaine started to read the note, I got down on one knee, took the real ring from my pocket, and the rest was a teary blur :) Of course Elaine says yes! Thankfully the photographers captured everything on camera so we can remember this moment forever! We finished the photoshoot and then ate Japanese food at Minami Restaurant. A perfect proposal!
