Dzeneta and Haroon
How We Met
Haroon and my love story is unique, to say the least! We met a long time before we actually started dating. Both of our families immigrated to Pittsburgh after leaving our home country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was inevitable that our families would meet since they both came from the same exact city in Bosnia, Mostar. We literally knew each other at the ages of 4 and 5 years old. I can still remember playing outside of my apartment complex with little Haroon. It wasn’t until Haroon’s 6th birthday party that he made the first move. Yep, that’s right… He asked his cousin Larisa, who was one of my best friends, to bring me in the bathroom so he could give me a kiss. I always had a crush on him, so of course, I said yes! He waited in the bathroom until Larisa and I came in and he then proceeded to lay a peck on my lips! We were each other’s first kiss! The craziest thing is that this is a memory literally all three of us remember to this day.
My family ended up moving away from the area where Haroon lived and we went our separate ways for a couple of years. We would see each other from time to time at different events our parents would take us to, but we never really spoke to one another. Along the way one of us requested the other on Facebook and we began to message back and forth. I still remembered our first kiss and I was curious if Haroon remembered it at all, so I asked. To my surprise, he remembered it too!
We become not only Facebook friends, but actual friends as well. We would see each other summer to summer when we were both in Mostar, but it wasn’t until the summer of 2016 that things transpired from friendship to something more. I came to Mostar after Haroon that summer and I ran into him one of my first nights there. We were together every day after that! He was unlike anyone I had ever met before. He made me laugh until my cheeks hurt, and I always felt safe with him. One night Haroon was taking me home and he said “what’s today’s date?” it was July 18th and he said, “okay today’s our anniversary, you’re my girlfriend now!” I didn’t really get an option, but it wasn’t like I was going to say no…
My dad always says Haroon’s quiet, but that it’s okay because I talk enough for the both of us. Which is true.. He’s a man of few words, but when you get through the hard exterior you get to the big teddy bear inside of him that loves to cuddle! He isn’t afraid to tell me when I’m wrong and he always wants the absolute best for me and for us. He’s my rock. Our love story has been unique from the very beginning and I wouldn’t trade it for the world! I can’t wait to spend the rest of my days with the love of my life and my absolute best friend!
How They Asked
Haroon and I were planning a trip back to Mostar in 2018. It just so happened we were going to be there during our two year anniversary (July 18th, 2018), so we wanted to do something special to celebrate. We booked a trip to the eternal city, Rome. I had no idea that Haroon had a huge surprise waiting for me there. That day was full of walking around the city, exploring, sightseeing and sweating! It was one of the hottest days.
I could tell Haroon was acting weird, but I kept thinking the sun got to him. Ha! He was so adamant about going back to the room early and getting ready so we could come back to the Colosseum later. On our way back I stopped at a little Italian boutique, I only brought a carry-on and totally under packed, I ended up buying the dress I wore when he proposed in that little boutique! We got ready and went to the hotel rooftop to grab a drink before walking to the Colosseum. He was so nervous and extra quiet for some reason. I didn’t really catch on, but like I said I do enough talking for the both of us, soo… We got to the Colosseum and he told me we should sit at this cafe and grab something small to eat, so we sat down.
He told me how he read somewhere online that there was this little spot above that cafe where people take pictures and we should go up there. We headed up and there was a man in front of us that kinda stopped and let us go in front of him, he had all this camera gear and I didn’t think twice because Rome is full of people with cameras, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary. We got to the spot and there wasn’t anyone to take the picture for us, so Haroon took a selfie and then looked at me… He said “Dzen I have a question to ask you” and that’s when it hit me. He started getting down on one knee and my heart EXPLODED.
He opened the ring box and it was a ring we randomly looked at nine months prior to this moment. Haroon got so nervous no words came out of his mouth, I had to ask him what his question was…LOL. He snapped out of it and everything else was a blur. He got up and we kissed, hugged and I started crying and only after that I realized that guy that was walking in front of us was taking pictures! Haroon had it all planned. He hired a photographer a month before our trip and he captured our special moment.
