Dwaina and Anil
How We Met
I met Anil at Queens College when we both entered the TIME 2000 Mathematics-Secondary Education program, designed for undergraduate students who wanted to become math teachers. We were not friends for the first 3 years mostly because Anil was antisocial and shy, and I was busy trying to career I really wanted to pursue (I ultimately became a math teacher). Fate had it that we kept being assigned projects together until we eventually became friends. Almost a year after graduating from Queens College together, Anil showed up at my doorstep with a bracelet, flowers and a bottle of Rosé. He asked my father if he could take me out on a date… and the rest is history!
how they asked
Anil and I regularly attend church on Saturdays in Harlem with my extended family. The church is where I was raised and where I eventually see myself raising my own children. On October 24, 2015 after the choir had finished singing, Anil was given the microphone and he proceeded to come up to the front of the church. He started giving his testimony in the traditional format, saying things he was grateful for. He then began to talk about how grateful he was for his girlfriend.
“And the last thing… which is long overdue, I want to thank the lord for my girlfriend.
I remember meeting Dwaina 6 years ago at Queens College.
I remember the first time I saw her, I was thinking “she’s very beautiful but she’s always angry.” she always had that angry face. the first few years I didn’t talk to her. I was scared of her. but eventually small talk lead to a friendship. I realized how smart, how witty, humor(ous), clever she was. How she had a good head on her shoulders and when we graduated I realized I was missing a part of myself, and so I had to pursue her. So I wanted to take this opportunity to tell her and the church how I really feel about her. Dwaina, you’re my rock, you’re my passion, you’re my hope, my inspiration, my motivation. You’re my best friend, my soulmate, and my love. There’s just one more role that I’d like you to fill.
Will you marry me?”
