How We Met
Dustin & I met through a mutual friend we had in high school. We went to the same high school, but we were 2 years apart. Our high school had easily over 2,000 kids so we never really saw each other. We did run track together, but didn’t know one another until after he graduated high school.
I went away to college, but wasn’t far from home. On breaks I would come back and hang out with friends from high school. I remember hanging out at our friends house and he was heading to his truck to leave and I ran out after him to give him a hug goodbye. I had butterflies when talking and hang out with him, I was so smitten.
One night I was in my dorm and I got a text message from a number I didn’t have and it was him. He had gotten my number from our friend and we just started talking. He had said that he wanted to go visit our friend at college and that we should go together (even though that didn’t end up happening). So we talked on and off for a few months, but than we ended up going our separate ways.
He started dating someone else for a few weeks, but then reached out to me and wanted to give it another chance between us. We started going on dates and hanging out a lot more. We got closer and grew to learn more about one another. He came up to my school and I went home some weekends to see him.
We started officially going out on May 15, 2011. We went to a late movie one weekend and when we pulled into his parents drive way he just turned off the car and sat there for a few minutes than turned and looked at me and asked me to be his girlfriend. I will never forget the night.
He and I have gone through highs and lows & always come out on top. We have lived together for almost 3 years now, we have two dogs together and are looking forward to the future.
how they asked
Our friend Danielle and I saw a really cool bar on Facebook that had clear, heated igloos on the rooftop in Manhattan, NY. So her husband and Dustin looked for hotels and booked a room without her and I knowing. They told us we were going to the city Friday night to stay over to go to the bar with the igloos. All the signs were there, but I didn’t really pick up on them. The boys usually don’t book or plan things in advanced so it was different, but really nice. So when I got home Friday night we got in the car, picked up Zach & Danielle and headed to the city. I didn’t want to go to the tree in Time Square since I’ve seen it before, so Dustin said that we should go to the Brooklyn Bridge. It was freezing cold and windy, but I was down to go to the bridge.
We took a cab over to the bridge and started walking on it. There were cars flying by on both sides and wind whipping through us, but he was holding my hand and looked extra happy (it was really cute so I didn’t care how cold it was). I wondered why we were on the bridge in the middle of December on one of the coldest nights (I was hoping there was a bar at the end of the bridge *hehe*). As we were walking hand in hand, he slowly tugged on my arm to stop. When I turned and looked at him he started to talk to me he got down on one knee and my heart stopped and it felt like everything else around us froze.
All I could see was him, nothing else. He went on to tell me how much he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me and how happy he is. Than he asked me if I would marry him and pulled the box out of his pocket. I was in such shock and excitement that all I could do was shake my head yes with a big grin on my face. I jumped into his arms and he gave me such a big hug and so many kisses. I just couldn’t stop kissing him & smiling.
Our friends got it on video and were cheering in excitement for us. I couldn’t believe that it happened. He was so cute and really put a lot of thought and effort into it. It seemed like the whole world knew that he was going to ask except for me. It was great!
Then we walked back to the streets to grab a cab and head back to Manhattan to go out and celebrate! He told me how he had been practicing for months, getting down on one knee & thinking about what he wanted to say to me. When he told me he watched videos and was practicing I thought it was the most adorable thing ever. He said he didn’t say some of the things he planned on saying because he was so nervous and got down on the wrong knee. I didn’t even know there was a specific knee and it didn’t matter to me because the guy I was in love with was asking me the most important question of my life!
