Devan and Christian
How We Met
Christian and I have been dating for 11 years this past July. We started dating when I was 14 and he was 17 so the odds were always stacked against us. I remember doodling my name with his last name in 9th grade and here I am at 25 years old and making that doodle a reality. It wasn’t always easy to stay together but it has always been worth it. There is no one else in the world who could ever love and understand me like he does. Every single day he reminds me to love the life I’m living and truly do whatever makes me happy. Our relationship has always been unique and special and his proposal to me was nothing short of perfect.
how they asked
We are so blessed to live in the beautiful city of Long Beach so it wasn’t strange when Christian asked me to go for a walk that evening. However, the radio being off in the car, his nonstop coughing, and the sweat pouring down his face was too strange. He kept asking me how my day was but wouldn’t let me finish telling him. When we were walking on the boardwalk he kept squeezing my hand and pointing out how beautiful the sunset was. When he finally started to lead me on to the beach, I could see flickering candle lights in the distance and he said, “Devan, first of all, I didn’t know there would be a beach concert going on right behind us but that’s also always what you’ll get with me, surprises and a little chaos. I love you. I have always loved you. It’s always been you.”
As we approach the candle lights laid out in the shape of a big heart, there were signs that he hand made that led the pathway which had lyrics from all of our favorite songs together over the course of our decade. At the last sign he got down on his knee and took my hand and said, “please make me the happiest and luckiest guy in the world, be my best friend forever and marry me”. Our families were hiding in the jetties behind us so when I cried out “YES!” They all came running over with sparklers and bubbles. People were watching from all angles, crying and cheering and wishing us the best. It is and will always be one of the most special nights of my whole life.
