How We Met

Our Love Story Timeline:

November 2004, Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School – Where It All Began!

I was a Junior (and thinking “How cool am I?!”) because I snuck back to the round tables in the “senior section” of the cafeteria to chat with some people I knew. It was November and I was super excited because in just a few days I would be heading to Disney World for the very first time! I sat down at the table where everyone was hanging out and suddenly realized I was sitting next to someone I didn’t know – so I introduced myself. He introduced himself as John and in that moment, I knew something was special about him. Naturally, being the outgoing, bubbly (sometimes obnoxious) individual that I am, I noticed John and I both had Nextel’s (blast from the past) and made sure we swapped “chirp” numbers. I put him in my phone as “j0hnny b0y” and that was that. I went about my business, went to my classes, and in a few short days I was off to sunny Florida!

I have an amazing relationship with my mom, Donna, so naturally during our trip to Florida I casually filled her in on this new kid John that I met at school. Then one morning as we were getting ready to leave our hotel room and head to one of the Disney parks, my phone went off… someone chirped me & that someone was ‘j0hnny boy!” My heart skipped a beat and I remember running out to the balcony to talk with him. I don’t remember what we spoke about but I can still feel those butterflies in my tummy when I think about it.

Once I came home from Florida, John and I began to talk and see each other on a regular basis. It was a cold day in December, (the 16th to be exact,) and John offered to walk me home from school. We walked the few blocks to my house but then I walked John to the train station – not yet ready to leave him. We walked down the little pathway to the train entrance together, stepped off to the side and turned towards each other to say so-long. I looked up at him, he looked at me and what I thought was going to be just a kiss on the cheek goodbye turned into one of the best things to ever happen to me. BAM! We kissed – a real kiss – on the lips…. For all I know, the galaxies could have collided in that very moment & I would have cared less! The second he left to get on the train I knew I couldn’t wait for the chance to kiss him again! Two weeks later, John and I made it official (after my nudging a bit – surprise, surprise) and on December 30, 2004 we became “girlfriend and boyfriend.”

A few months later, on May 27, 2005, it was John’s Senior Prom! I was all dolled up – beautiful gown, hair done, makeup done – and in the back of my parents mini van on my way to meet John at his house, along with everyone else who was going to be in our limo for the night. As my dad pulled the van up in front of his house, John was just stepping out of the front door onto the stoop dressed in his tuxedo and in that exact moment I said to myself “I am going to marry him one day.” I’ve never had a stronger gut-feeling or intuition again in my entire life and from that moment on I never once not-believed that John and I were going to one day be husband and wife.

We may not have been “girlfriend and boyfriend” every day since December of 2004 but our hearts have always belonged to one another. Our “high school sweetheart” phase came to an end in the summer of 2005 but we always found our way back to one another and then in January of 2011 we had our very last first date. It has been nothing but a magical ride ever since and on October 31, 2015 when John got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, all my dreams came true. I said “YES!” to the man I love more than anything in the world, to my best friend, to my knight in shining armor – a promise to spend forever together, loving each other and supporting one another for all the years to come, growing older and wiser together. What’s even more exciting is that on October 14, 2017, we get to say “I do” to all of that as well & begin our lives together as one – as husband and wife – as Mr. & Mrs. John-Vincent Compitello.

how they asked

For months I had hoped and prayed that we would be engaged before the holidays & I dreamed up ways of how/when it would happen – never expecting it on Halloween. We have never been the couple to dress up in costumes and head off to a Halloween party & this year was no different. We woke up that morning and took a ride out to New Jersey, escaping the hustle and bustle of NYC for a few hours. It was about 6:30PM and we decided to make our way home before heading to an Aunt’s house later that evening for dinner. This day was just like any other & I was clueless as to what was about to happen when we got home.

We walked into John’s house at about 7PM & I was chatting about how excited I was to have an hour to get ready for dinner – not having to rush. When I stopped to put my bag down, I noticed the house was abnormally dark. The only lights on were above the fireplace, yet his mom was sitting in a nearby chair flipping through a magazine. “What is going on? Why is the house so dark & quiet? How can she even see what’s in that magazine with such poor lighting?” As these thoughts were running through my head, John turned to me with a Ring Pop candy in his hand and gave it to me as he said “Oh look, babe, trick or treat!” I giggled, thinking to myself “YAY, I finally got “the ring!” NEVER expecting him to then drop down to one knee and pull out a ring box from his pocket.

Our families snuck out from the dark dining room where they were all hiding, and there I stood – seeing the love of my life on one knee in front of me, asking the question I have longed to hear escape from his lips. “Will you marry me?” Through the smiles, tears, giggles and shock, I was able to blurt out a high-pitched “YES!” For all the times I dreamt about how that moment would play out, it was never that perfect. Our engagement was exactly what I have always wanted – private and witnessed by our families. I am beyond excited for our future together as husband & wife.
