How We Met
We met in freshman year in college at the University of Hawaii and remained great friends until something changed senior year. Garret went away for a mission trip in Chile and came back a changed man, he started to like me and it took a few weeks for me to get there but I fell hard for him. He was everything I was looking for and more, and he was right in front of me the whole time. We started dating for a few months but then I had to move away, we continued pursuing each other and this was the official start to our long distance journey.
Little did we know I would be leaving the country in a few months to teach at an international school in Thailand! Let’s just say it has been so hard not being with each other, but we have always worked it out and have confidence in our relationship and our faith in God. We get to see each other about every four months or so. As my time in Thailand comes to an end, it will be hard to leave but it’s easy to say that I am hooked and so ready to marry my best friend!
How They Asked
On my winter break from school, we were visiting his family in Northern California and we had planned to spend a few days in Yosemite National Park with my best friend and her husband. Unfortunately, we heard the parks were not taking care of because of the government shut down, we were sad but we were still willing to go. Until Garret’s friend and boss offered us a cabin in the woods in Lake Tahoe. We ended up taking the offer because we knew it would be beautiful! We picked up our friends from the airport, drove to Tahoe and unpacked our things at the cabin. We quickly got ready because we wanted to catch the sunset at a nearby park on the lake.
As we got there we found a pier that we walked out on and started taking pictures of the beautiful snow capped mountains. All of a sudden Garret got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, I immediately took off my glove and told him to put the ring on my finger! Of course, I said yes but I was in shock from the beauty of the ring, as we were hugging in celebration he told me that there was one more surprise for me, I looked down the pier and my sister was there taking photos of us!
She is a professional wedding photographer in Hawaii, and she was hiding in the bushes documenting the whole thing! We ran down the pier to greet her, I have never been so excited and happy in my life! We popped some champagne and took some engagement photos as the sunset. It was the best day of my life and it couldn’t have been more special! We even got a huge snow storm the next day and I got to experience snow for the first time with my favorite people, it was a weekend I will never forget.
