Deirdre and Matthew
How We Met
Matthew always likes to make fun of how we met and how we started dating–if you ask him, he will say I was after him for the beginning, but in reality we worked together for a few years before we started dating!
We both were working for small consulting firms, working on a large project in completely different areas of the project, but he always made a point to say hello and invite me out to events, which I didn’t except until much later :)
I invited him to my 25th birthday and from then on out we started hanging out more and more. He even started leaving my favorite Starbucks treat at my desk (tall chai latte and a blueberry scone)! He made all sorts of romantic gestures, making sure I knew how he felt, and I am SO lucky he was so persistent and that I get to spend my life with the best man in the world!
how they asked
Last November, we headed to L.A. for a friend’s wedding and since Matthew used to live in L.A., he wanted to take me out a few days early to explore his old stomping grounds. My birthday was about a month previously, and he had told me that I would be getting my belated birthday gift while we were out there. Naturally, I assumed it would be in the form of an activity…little did I know it would be the best belated birthday gift and surprise of my life.
So a few days before our friend’s wedding, he took me on a day trip to Malibu. He rented a silly yellow convertible and we cruised the Pacific Coast Highway with the top down, exploring the area, including a trip to the Getty Villa.
Afterwards he took me to an amazing lunch at Geoffery’s in Malibu and asked “Do you want your birthday present before or after lunch?” and I said “After” because now I really wasn’t sure what I was going to get!
Geoffery’s is right on the ocean, with some of the most breath-taking views I have ever seen. After lunch Matthew told me to close my eyes and, as you might guess, when he told me to open my eyes, he was on one knee. I was in SHOCK and remember him saying, “Was this worth the wait?” and I said “Well, you have to ask me the question!” haha. He did indeed ask and some lovely people were able to capture a picture of us right after. I think I stayed in complete shock until we got in the car and I called my mom and starting sobbing.
The best part of this proposal is that we are HUGE fans of the show Entourage and when Matthew was planning the proposal he did tons of research to find out exactly where our favorite TV couple, Sloan and E, got engaged–it was at Geoffery’s in the exact same area that we sat and much of the earlier part of our day (driving in the convertible down PCH) was exactly what happend on the show :)
When I put all these pieces together I was stunned! He truly blew me away with how thoughtful and creative he was with the proposal and I couldn’t have asked for a better day or a better man to be spending the rest of my life with.
