How We Met
We met back in 2016 – I was a freshman in college and Luca was a sophomore. I first saw him while I was eating my lunch at Chipotle on the university campus. Although we were a few tables away, we couldn’t stop nervously looking over in the other’s direction. He was eating lunch with his friends, but stood up to walk past me. With a big smile on his face, he said “hello,” but then nervously turned back around and walked back to his table. He grabbed his skateboard and rode away, but that didn’t stop us from exchanging flirty stares and smiles. Watching him leave was a feeling I’d never experienced before – I felt so sad knowing that I’d never see him again.
For weeks, I’d walk around campus secretly hoping that I’d find this boy and that our paths would cross again, but they did not. It wasn’t until I recognized his face on a billboard advertising for the men’s tennis team. In a matter of minutes, I had pulled up the team’s roster on my phone, found his name, and added him on Facebook. Meanwhile, Luca was at a tennis tournament in Malibu when he got my friend request. He excitedly began showing my profile picture to his teammates and within an hour, he messaged me on Facebook. Which, knowing Luca now, is a miracle in itself since he had never messaged a girl on social media in his life. On our first date, we talked for more than 6 hours, my fingers and toes tingling the entire time out of nervousness. I called my family afterward and told them that this would be the man I’d marry one day. At the time, they questioned my sanity, but here we are, 5 years later, engaged, and ready to start our lives together.
How They Asked
Throughout the past few years, Luca and I often times talked about our future – getting married, owning a house, and having kids one day. After spending a few months with me in quarantine, he knew that I was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Luca wanted to make the proposal perfect, so he reached out to my family and friends for some help. Since I am very intuitive and catch onto clues quickly, he committed to hiding all his text and email messages from me. This posed a challenge since we are ALWAYS on each other’s phones.
He custom ordered the engagement ring with my dad, who effortlessly gave Luca his blessing. On August 7, 2020, Luca called me at work and asked if I wanted to join him for a picnic at our favorite spot in Newport Beach. When we arrived, we walked along the water and watched the waves crash. He stopped me at 42nd Street, a very special place in our hearts. It was the spot we always spent time at as college students and more importantly, Luca’s favorite surf spot!
In fact, earlier that morning, while Luca was surfing, he looked out to the sand and thought, “This is the exact spot where I will make Deena my fiancé.” He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. At that moment, I looked up to see all of my friends and family running towards me. Luca had organized a beautiful arrangement by the Picnic Collective and surprised me with a house on the beach for the weekend! It was hands down the best day of my entire life.
