How We Met
We met on Match.com! Almost 3 years ago, I went on Match not really sure what I was looking for. It was the summertime and I was looking for fun. In all honesty, I thought my 3 month subscription was can called automatically, so I went on enjoying the rest of my labor day weekend. I signed back on just to see if I had any access to the site at all and found out that Match renewed my account for me. Crap. I thought I was done with it. Oh well, I guess I’ll make the best of it! Oh look! I have an email. It’s from this guy named Tim who seems interested in me, and he’s cute! I write him back apologizing for not getting back to him sooner (the email was from a week ago!).
We chatted for a few days via email and then we exchanged phone numbers. We clicked instantly. There was never dead air or lack of things to talk about. we decided to make a plan to meet. It was a Friday night in September and I had a hair appointment that afternoon. I was going from bleach blonde back to my more natural red hair. I kept him in the loop and told him that I was going to be a little late (::cough:: almost 3 hours later than the original time ::cough::).
He picked the place: Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Clifton, NJ. He was waiting for me outside of the restaurant and all I kept thinking was “wow, he’s tall!” (He is 6’2″ and I’m 5’6″). We gave each other a kiss on the cheek ad proceeded to go inside. The place was packed so we started out at the bar and then quickly got a table. We ordered a pizza and a few drinks and began talking.. for hours. I felt so comfortable with this person who I just met. We laughed, talked about anything and everything, and the next thing we knew we were the last people in the place. He paid the bill and we walked outside. Like a true gentleman, he walked me to my car where we had our first kiss. I haven’t never felt butterflies like I did that night. We enjoyed each other’s company so much, that 2 nights later we met up a local bar for drinks!
The rest is really history! :)
how they asked
We were planning our trip (my dream trip!) to Napa for almost a year. We were going to go to California (Napa Valley and San Francisco) for a week to celebrate my 30th birthday (side note – we have gone on vacation for every birthday of mine that we have been together!). I was trying to face my fear of heights, so I booked us a hot air balloon ride our first morning in Napa (2.28.16). The night before our flight we had planned to stay at my parents house because they were driving us to the airport. Tim had to work that day, so I took the luggage in my car. When he got out of work, he met me at my parents and immediately got upset because my trunk was open with our bags still in my car (my parents live in a safe neighborhood).
OOPS! I’ve been driving around with the ring in my car the whole time! We get to the airport, go through security, no problems. We get on the plane, put our carryons in the overhead compartment, and Tim’s won’t fit (the ring was in his carryon)! I’m telling him to just check it and they’ll bring it underneath the plane, but he is determined to get in up there. He takes out a few things, and phew! It fits! We are on our way!!
We landed in SF, got into our rental car, and started driving to Napa. My phone rang and it was the hot air balloon company confirming our flight for the night morning. I of course said yes – see you tomorrow! The woman on the phone then wished me a happy birthday. Weird, I never said it was my birthday when I initially booked it. Tim quickly covered it up by telling me that I probably had to give my license or birthdate when I booked it a while ago. Oh, of course that happened (no, it didn’t haha – but I was too nervous and excited for the trip that I let it slide!).
Our first night in Napa: We are at a restaurant having dinner and next to us is a loud bachelorette party (ugh), and then we meet a lovely young couple from Tennessee also in Napa celebrating her 30th birthday! They tell us they’ve been married for 6 years and have 2 little ones at home. Wow, congrats! I turn to Tim and make him promise me that I’ll at least have a baby before I turn 35! (The whole time he’s thinking “just wait 12 more hours!”)
The morning of our flight: Instructions for the hot air balloon told us to dress warm because the air will be colder a mile up. I obliged and brought gloves and a hat. When we pulled up the hotel to meet the group for the flight, I purposely left my gloves in the car. Tim asked me why and I told him simply that it was very warm that morning and I didn’t need them (the whole time he is thinking that I knew what he was planning). We signed our waivers and I stepped away to grab a cup of coffee, while Tim was handing in the signed waivers he got to introduce himself has “the guy is going to propose.” And we’re off! We arrive at the launch site where several other balloons have already started their flights.
I’m a nervous wreck, but ready to face my fear! We get into the balloon (with 18 other people) and take off! It really is a beautiful adventure, and not scary at all (except for the fact that you’re a mile up!). We float for about 45 minutes, and now it’s time to land. The pilot missed a few landing spots, had to avoid hitting some trees, hit into 2 of them on the way down (scary at the time, very funny now), and finally found a landing spot on a football field where a rugby match was about to begin. We land, we are safe! I am the first one out of the basket and Tim is right behind me. I am very happy to be on solid ground at this point!
Part of our flight package is to have a champagne breakfast right after the flight, so I am very anxious to have a mimosa after all of that. Tim stopped me, gave me a kiss and asked me “you know how much I love you right?” which isn’t uncommon for him to say, so I didn’t pay much mind to it; “Of course I do, love, now let’s get in the van for that breakfast!” He told me to hold on, backed up, and got down on one knee.
At this point I believe I blacked out. He told me loved me and asked me to be his wife. I was in such a state of shock, Tim then said,a “you know you haven’t said yes yet, right?” “YES! YES! Of course!!” Meanwhile, unbeknownst to me, he had called the company ahead of time and planned to have a photographer capture this beautiful moment for us (which is why they initially wished me a happy birthday – because that is what he told them we were celebrating). I always knew Tim was a romantic, but I never thought in a million years he would go through this much trouble to ask me to spend the rest of my life with him. The rest of the vacation was amazing, and we got to celebrate our engagement for an entire week alone (and my 30th birthday!) before returning home and I couldn’t of pictured it any other way!
