How We Met
Ricky and I met during our freshman year of college at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and started dating during our second semester. Notre Dame is famous for its golden dome atop the main administrative building and Ricky decided he thought I was pretty cute when he lied and told me that the dome was made of radioactive gold, which led to its brilliant shine, and I gullibly believed him. He asked me to be his girlfriend in April of our freshman year and we had our first very fancy, very romantic dinner date at the North Dining Hall. After that it was years of fun going to Notre Dame football games, traveling Europe during our semester abroad, and just spending time together. Notre Dame will always hold such a special place in our hearts! We had so much fun in college – traveling to visit his home in St. Louis, Missouri and mine in Buffalo, New York – but for those years we had Indiana to call our common home. Since then though, we’ve been all over the place.
After college, I took a job with a consulting firm in Chicago, Illinois where I lived for two years and Ricky took a finance job down in Dallas, Texas. We took a lot of north-south flights during those two years to see each other. Then, in summer of 2015, I moved to New York City to attend Columbia Law School and I’ve been living there for the past two years, while Ricky took a different finance job in his hometown of St. Louis. Now all of a sudden we were taking a lot of east-west flights in order to spend time together. Finally, this summer, we got to live together again (at least temporarily, I have one more year of school left in New York) when I took a summer internship at a law firm in St. Louis. We will be together again, permanently, after I graduate in May 2018!! It has been many years of racking up airline miles, but the end of long distance is in sight for us. We have come a long way from the teenagers we were when we met. When we first started dating, I was only 18 years old. On the day before my 26th birthday, Ricky got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him!
how they asked
This summer, Ricky and I were finally reunited for an extended period of time when I took an internship in St. Louis at a law firm. My birthday is July 3rd and when I found out I had the 3rd and 4th off from work, we decided to take a long weekend trip up to Banff National Park in the Canadian province of Alberta, about an hour and a half west of Calgary. We had been wanting to go up to see Banff for awhile to admire the beautiful turquoise glacial lakes and magnificent mountains, but never had enough time to do it. Now was the perfect time! On our second day in Banff, the day before my birthday, we spent the entire day outdoors. We took a small hike to a waterfall, had lunch, went horseback riding through the mountains, and then finally headed back to our hotel to freshen up before dinner.
At one point, Ricky said he needed to leave the room to go take a “work call” – little did I know, he was downstairs meeting up with the photographer he hired to show her exactly the spot where he intended to pop the question!! Once we were all dressed and ready, Ricky suggested we head to the outside terrace at our hotel, the Fairmont Banff Springs, to take a photo in front of the magnificent mountain back drop. The weather was perfect, the air was so fresh, and the views were amazing. After I looked out to admire the mountains, I turned around to find Ricky down on one knee! It was an amazing moment in a perfect setting.
I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect place to share this special moment together!
