How We Met

It was a beautiful Sunday morning on October 20th 2013. At the time I was working as an Emergency Medical Responder just outside of Edmonton. I was on a bit of a long haul as I only had 2 days off in the last 31 days, working 12+ hour days. As I was on site sitting in my work truck, I had tuned into CISN Country 103.9 and was listening to Randy Marshall (He has always been a favorite). While listening, I was also on Twitter (yes I know, working REALLY hard!) and decided to ‘tweet’ into Randy and thank him for the amazing music he was playing that day.

All of a sudden I heard my name being called out. Randy was giving me a shoutout over the radio! He had also wrote me back and retweeted my tweet.

It wasn’t long after and I had about 8 new followers on Twitter. So given the fact I was obviously working even harder, I decided to check out my new followers. A few minutes in, I came across Darin’s account and I couldn’t help but think “Hmmm 28 y/o, farm boy from Saskatchewan, who hunts and sleds! That’s worth a follow back” and so I did just that.

Later on that day, I received a direct message from Darin, thanking me for following him back. We chatted back and forth for a short while, and I sent him “This is painful. Want to just text? If you promise you’re not some crazy stocker, weirdo ! Lol”

We exchanged numbers and began to text each other.

2 days later we decided to meet face to face at a pub called Schank’s in Edmonton. I was pretty nervous walking in. As we met for the first time, I told him I was going to hug him, because that’s what I do. So we hugged and sat down to have a drink. 5 hours later, we actually realized how long we had been there and decided we should probably call it a night.

He was a complete gentleman and paid for the bill, opened the door and walked me to my truck. We talked for a few more minutes, and as we hugged goodbye, when he leaned down and gave me a kiss. We both just smiled like children who had just kissed for the first time. He opened my truck door and told me to text him when I got home.

Who would have thought that a simple tweet would lead me to my soulmate.

And as they say…. The rest is history.

how they asked

I had made a plan to take Danni around to a number of places in Edmonton, where we had experienced our firsts together. I played it off to her that we needed to fill a picture frame at home, and one of our bare shelves with some pictures of us. I had made up little envelopes with clues for her to figure out where we were heading, incorporated some props along the way, and told her that we would just take some selfies at each stop during the day. We started with a picture of us and the tweet that started it all (Yes, we actually met via Twitter!!). From there it was off to Rexall Place, as we had made it official that we were dating during CFR there, in November of 2013. We then headed to Schanks, as this was the first place we had actually met face to face, and had our first kiss J After a drink to reminisce, we headed to the theater where we had our first movie date, to watch Frozen. From there, we headed back home for a quick stop, where we had our first date of carving pumpkins, and where our little furry friend, Boots (the cat), was waiting for us at the door.

From there it was out to her parents, where I knew Amara was already hiding in waiting, and with her car in the garage!! When we got there, immediately she wanted to let the dogs out of the garage, which I had to actually grab her by the coat and haul her away, to keep her from going in. We headed down to the pasture to grab her horse, and I stopped to grab a halter out of the barn. She was asking what we needed that for, but went along with it, and out we went to grab Truman (her horse). I was keen on watching for Amara’s marking in the snow for the perfect picture spot, and found it no problem. We made it out, grabbed Truman, took a couple pictures ourselves there, and then headed back to the yard. We approached “the spot” and I actually started feeling a little nervous!! We reached the spot, I stopped her, told her how much I loved her and that I wanted to make her my wife. I watched her jaw drop and the look of utter excitement as I reached in to my pocket, dropped to my knee and asked her to marry me.
