Daniella and Kyle
How We Met
Kyle and I met in college as new tour guides. After we got accepted, the newbies had a party to celebrate. When I walked in, I automatically remembered him and his adorable smile from our first tour guide meeting, so I knew I had to go talk to him. After a few minutes of chatting, I attempted to flirt… but he quickly realized what I was trying to do and told me he had a girlfriend. I was MORTIFIED, and promptly decided that he most likely hated me… so, I didn’t talk to him again for 6 months (logical, right?). Fast forward to the beginning of the next school year. We had both just gotten back from a summer tour guide trip to the Outer Banks, where I decided to get up the courage to talk to him again. Over that trip, we became super close, and by the end I knew I wanted to be more than friends with him. When we got back to school, he texted a small group of us tour guides to come to his apartment to hang out, so I decided to head over and maybe try my luck again. I was the first one there, so we sat on the couch and waited for the others to arrive. Thirty minutes passed, and he and I were still the only ones there. Another hour passed of just us, laughing and flirting, but we couldn’t care less that no one else showed up! (Oh, by the way, he had broken up with his girlfriend that summer, don’t worry). Long story short: God knew what he was doing when he didn’t have anyone else come hang out that night. We chatted until 2am and when Kyle FINALLY leaned in to kiss me, I fell head over heels. He asked me to be his girlfriend, and from that night, we knew we were meant to be together.
How They Asked
We had been dating for 3 years, and right around our anniversary, Kyle came back from a 9 month deployment in Iraq. We wanted to spend a fun weekend together, so he and I planned on surprising my sister for our birthday (she and I are born on the same day) back at the same college all three of us went/go to. My sister, Cassandra, was turning 21 and I wanted to be there with her on her big night out. So, Kyle and I packed our bags and headed out to our old college town for the weekend.
Little did I know, Kyle not only was planning on helping me surprise my sister, but he was also planning on proposing that weekend!! Our birthday eve arrived, and right before the clock struck midnight, I surprised my sister and she was so shocked (she even cried happy tears, hehe)! Cass was extremely happy to see Kyle there as well, and she quickly figured out that he was going to propose the next day. I was oblivious however, because I was so focused on surprising my sister I didn’t think anything else was going to happen. The next day, after a super fun night of birthday festivities, all of us decided to go take photos around campus. We met my sister at the tour guide building where Kyle and I first met, and Kyle suggested that we go take photos by the pond next to the building. Thinking nothing of it, I started to head over to the spot. Cass began snapping photos of me and Kyle, and right as I was about to ask my sister to come join me for a picture, Kyle stopped me and said “Wait, one more”.
He took my hands, dropped down on one knee, and explained that he wanted to take the next step with me at the place where it all started. He asked me to marry him, and it was the easiest “YES!” I have ever said. I was absolutely shocked, and it was hands down the best birthday present I have ever gotten (getting my sister 21 years ago comes as a close second ;) ) I still can’t believe I get to marry that cute and wonderful tour guide, but I am so dang glad I get to be his wife.
