How We Met
We met through mutual friends, basically. We had a lot of friends in common but for one reason or another, we were never at the same place at the same time. We had both been through bad relationships/breakups so neither of us was really looking to date anyone for a while.. But eventually we started seeing each other at gatherings and so forth. One day, we started talking and by the end of the night, the conversation had gotten good and I didn’t want the night to end. So I asked for his number. We talked constantly for months. Then, we decided that since our goals in life lined up, as well as what qualities we were looking for in a future husband/wife, we decided to date. This involved the old fashion ask-my-dad-for-permission/blessing kind of thing. He survived that talk, and best of all, my parents were in favor!
how they asked
We had been talking about getting engaged for some time. We were both ready, he just hadn’t popped the question yet. About 3 months before it happened, he left his computer on while I was hanging out at his place. I glanced over when he went to the bathroom and read a beautiful poem/song a bout two people growing old together and still having a love as strong as they had in the beginning. When I get towards the end of the word doc… I discover, it was a proposal! A song he had written for me. Then fast forward 3 months, I had already forgotten all about the lyrics. Then comes December 7, 2013 at his parents’ house. It was supposedly a surprise wedding anniversary party for his twin sister. Everybody had me fooled. There was even a cake for this supposed occasion. After the surprise for the surprise party…we all began to relax into a great evening with friends and family. Harold said he had to get his guitar from his car so he and his friends could jam out. I thought nothing about it. He walks in and starts playing the guitar, an suddenly everyone starts to listen. He sings a beautiful song about two people growing old together and having a love as strong as when they first met….and it hit me. That’s the song! I start crying by the end of the song when he proposes!
