How We Met
Ryan was living in Brooklyn, and I was living in my namesake city of Dallas. We knew nothing of each other… until my childhood friend Drew put me in touch with Ryan (his best friend in New York) to travel to Drew’s wedding in Europe together. We started texting nonstop, and couldn’t wait until Europe to meet each other so we planned a trip to meet in Tulum, Mexico. As my mom likes to compare – the entire weekend was like a Hallmark movie set in the bohemian, romantic jungle beach. We went night swimming and played with baby sea turtles, salsa danced on the beach, and had our first kiss in the sand under a bright orange moon. We swam in cenotes and explored underground caves, belted 90s R&B songs together on a rooftop (one of the songs being K-Ci and JoJo All My Life), and danced until the wee hours of the morning at Papaya Playa’s Moon Party.
Due to Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean and flight complications, my flight was cancelled and I couldn’t get a new flight out on any airline for three more days. Ryan’s flight was still on, but he refused to leave me solo in Mexico so the trip that was supposed to be three days turned into six so we got to spend the next three days in Playa Mujeres. We continued our picture perfect trip getting to know each other playing beach volleyball, taking salsa lessons, and doing morning yoga. On our last night, we took a ferry to Isla de Mujeres where we rented a golf cart and drove it to the edge of the island. On an old dock, we sat and shared a bottle of wine with some cheese, and watched the most incredible sunset. It was that night (we later learned) where we both realized we were falling in love with each other.
How They Asked
On the anniversary of the date we met, Ryan and I went back to Tulum and ate at the restaurant Arca where we had our first “date”. There, in the middle of the jungle, Ryan got down on one knee and asked me to be his forever!
