Cynthia and David
how we met
All my life I thought I was going to marry the FIRST MAN I fell in love with and we would live in a huge castle and live happily ever after. But then I turned 8 years old and then 31 years old and fallen in and out of love. It wasn’t until I realized that I needed to fall in love with me first that the man of MY dreams would compliment the life and love I’ve ever dreamed of.
In 2016, the man of MY dreams appeared to me in the most romantic way, TINDER. I mean come on, it’s 2016, I’m 31 years old, working two jobs, and studying to pass my NCLEX EXAM for my RN license. Aint nobody got time to go out find her Prince Charming on the weekends. I had to work and support myself. So David appeared in the potential dating mates and I of course “swiped left”. David wasn’t charming, but I think that’s what made him different from others. He was polite, but he wasn’t trying to be someone else.
Dating for me was for just for me! It sounds selfish, but I’m not going to waste time on someone who’s going to tell me how beautiful I look or how much money they want to spend on me or the “important” people they know. But David, David was just David. He talked about his passions such as going to amazing restaurants, making beer in his apartment, and traveling with his family. He wasn’t trying to paint this amazing picture just to swoon you he expressed his passions in life, not the life he thought I wanted him to have.
One month after messaging back and forth, we went on our first date. I worked that whole day at the hospital (it was my only free night that week) and rushed home to clean up and meet David at a local Brewery (Mike Hess) in North Park, San Diego. It was already 9:00 pm and rushed over to meet David. When the Uber dropped me off in front to meet him, I saw him standing in front of the brewery. My first thought was “Ohh tall, dark, and handsome!”. I was nervous, but his smile made feel right at ease. It honestly felt like I already knew him.
Since it was already late on a Thursday night, every place we wanted to go was closed. So we decided to get a slice of cake at another bar down the street and end the night eating Carnitas Tacos in his truck on the side of the road. It was the perfect 3 hours of eating, drinking, and getting to know each other. No pressure and good food. The three things I knew right away with David was that he knows good food, always makes sure you’re taken care of first, and spontaneity always works in his favor.
Our first date wasn’t a romantic one, but I now realize that our first date laid the foundation of how our relationship would begin. It’s been three years and we’ve traveled to Japan twice, Portland, St. Louis, Sacramento, San Francisco four times, Santa Cruz, Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs. We love to enjoy delicious meals through our travel adventures and our favorite night is a spontaneous trip to a local speakeasy.
