Crystal and Derek
How We Met
The creation of our love story began long before we met in 2015. We both had been praying and waiting for the perfect mate for a very long time. I had gotten so tired of dead end relationships that I almost wanted to quit dating all together and Derek had grown weary on his search to find a praying woman with morals and values. We both knew it would take something miraculous for us to meet the type of person we desired, especially in the world we live in today. Together our journey through our singleness was a long and tough one, but it was necessary to prepare us for each other. Little did we know our waiting would come to an end on December 19, 2015, and I’m here to tell you good men and good women still exist.
Since I had been single for so long, 3 years to be exact, I decided to be more open in my dating life. It seemed like everyone I talked to regarding my singleness offered the same suggestion, which was to try online dating. I was a bit reluctant after a failed attempt in the past and was even embarrassed about the thought of using a dating site to help me meet a guy. Nevertheless, after being asked this question multiple times and praying over this idea I decided to give it a shot. After all, what did I have to lose. So, on a sunny afternoon I logged on to Match.com, created my profile, and started looking at my potential matches. I must admit I felt very vulnerable about putting myself out there again and was praying the entire time. I hadn’t been online long when my fiancé’s profile picture caught my eye. He seemed very humble and down to earth, but most importantly he had a heart for God, which was most important to me. After reading his profile I sent him a wink.
I waited by my computer all day, checking my inbox to see if my favorite guy had responded, but to my surprise he had not. I had other guys messaging me wanting to chat, but my mind was still on D_hunt (my fiancé’s screenname). Although, some of the other guys that contacted me seemed nice Derek’s profile was the very first profile I came across that I really liked and deep down inside I wanted to hear from him the most. I really hoped he would respond back soon because I had no intentions on staying on Match.com another day. I had created my profile under a free one day trial and had no desire to subscribe. After about 9 hours of waiting I remember saying out loud, “Lord, this must not be meant to be”.
Before officially signing off and throwing in the towel I decided I would check my inbox one more time and to my amazement my special guy had finally responded! Turns out he was out all day at his grandparent’s anniversary party and had left his phone at home. When Derek made it home that night he got ready for bed and was literally about to fall asleep when he heard a voice tell him check his email. This key detail in our story is indeed the link to our story, because if Derek never checked his email while lying in bed that night we may have never met each other. Once Derek finally responded back I informed him that I was not going to be on Match.com anymore and if he was interested in getting to know each other more then we could message each other via another social media platform.
In the beginning our conversations were sporadic, but after a few weeks of off and on, hit or miss messaging we got it together. We exchanged numbers and ended up talking for hours into the wee hours of the morning. We had so much in common and had many of the same beliefs, it was almost surreal. There was no doubt we both were one of a kind in each other’s eyes. Our first date was a week after our first phone conversation and the rest is history. Here we are only 11 months later engaged!
how they asked
My fairy tale proposal came true on October 29, 2016. It all started with plans to go to Atlanta, GA for a laid back weekend getaway. Since Derek is such an organized individual I left most of our planning up to him. Our trip consisted of pretty ordinary activities, except for our date night, which was scheduled for Saturday night. Derek decided since we had not been on a nice date in a while that we would set aside time during our trip to do so. He made dinner reservations for 5:00 Saturday evening and to ensure I looked and felt my best on our date he helped me pick out a beautiful dress. The way he looked at me after trying on the dress made me feel like the most beautiful girl in the world!
The day started off as a typical day around the town. We ate breakfast that morning and did a little site seeing around the city. We ended up having so much fun out and about that we lost track of time, which put us behind schedule for our dinner reservations at 5 o’clock. By the time we got dressed and out the door we only had 5 minutes to get to the restaurant on time, which was literally impossible since we were staying in downtown Atlanta. As we quickly maneuvered our way through the busy streets, Derek looks at me and tells me there was something he had forgot to mention. He had to make a quick stop at a nearby park. Turns out he had told a cousin of his that lives in Atlanta that he would meet her at Piedmont Park to pick something up. The look on my face after hearing this news was priceless. I couldn’t believe he made plans to meet someone before dinner and we were already running late. All I could think about was food and satisfying my hunger. I thought this was a ridiculous plan, but I decided to go with the flow.
Once, we made it to Piedmont Park, I was a little hesitant to get out of the car. I was in high heels, a dress, and had a full face of makeup. The last thing I wanted to do was get out in the 80-degree heat and walk through a park before dinner. Derek insisted that I be a good sport and get out of the car. I must admit I was fussing the entire way through the park. My feet were killing me and people didn’t mind letting us know we were overdressed for the park by the glances they gave us.
After what seemed like a never ending trek through Mount Everest in high heels we finally made it to a spot on a bridge over water. I was so relieved to know we were taking a break that I was totally unaware of what was going on around me. To my left was a man with a saxophone that began playing the most beautiful song. Derek leaned in close to me and whispered, “He’s playing our song”. It was at that moment that I realized he was playing our favorite song, Why I Love You by Major, and the stop we made on the bridge was no coincidence. As the sweet notes from the saxophone began to sing in my ears my eyes began to swell with tears. Not only was the saxophonist playing our song, but he had a shirt on that read: My lucky charm, I love you. Will you marry me?
Unfortunately, I never saw the words “will you marry me” on his shirt because his sax had it covered up. I also couldn’t help but notice two photographers snapping pictures of us as we stood there listening to our song. I later discovered that Derek hired a photographer and a videographer to capture our special moment.
When the saxophonist finished his beautiful song, Derek took me by the hand, got on one knee and proposed right there.
I could not believe my eyes or my ears! As I answered his question with a heart felt yes, the crowd of onlookers began to cheer and clap! This was absolutely the most beautiful moment, and it was the most perfect proposal I could have ever imagined.
Our special moment didn’t end after he put the ring on my finger. After the proposal, we had the opportunity to take engagement photos in the park with both photographers. I was also surprised to discover that Derek actually had made our dinner reservations for 7 o’clock and not 5 o’clock, so we still got to celebrate our engagement with a nice romantic dinner afterwards!
This day was indeed the happiest day of my life and every time I watch our video or reminisce on how they asked me to marry him I get teary eyed. I thank God every day for blessing me with such an amazing man who thought so much of me that he would plan the perfect fairy tale proposal just for me. We are living proof, that God will answer your prayers and it is always worth the wait.
