How We Met
Wesley and I went to high school with each other in a suburb of Nashville, TN. We knew of each other due to mutual friends, but didn’t really talk. We were both dating other people. In summer 2013, he came home from school at UT Knoxville for summer break. It was the summer before my junior year of college and his senior year. This was the first time either one of us were single at the same time. Our mutual friends were in a relationship and we all began hanging out together. I don’t think he ever intended for a relationship to develop with our schools being about 250 miles apart. I went to school in Nashville and he went to school in Knoxville. However, the more we talked we realized how much we actually had in common. After several times of us all hanging out I got a text from Wesley asking me to dinner. We went to dinner and then to see the movie, The Proposal. After the movie, we went to my house and laid outside on my parents trampoline. We ended up talking for hours. From there our relationship began. Over the next several years we spent weekends driving back and forth between the two cities and spent summers together in our hometown.
how they asked
Fast forward almost four years later and we are on a trip to Breckenridge, CO to go skiing. Wesley and I both love skiing. It’s a new hobby, but one we have fallen in love with. There is nothing like the rush of adrenaline you feel when skiing down a mountain. We plan on continuing to ski and even eventually teaching our children how to ski.One of our best friend’s families owns a condo in Breckenridge. We have started a tradition of going on a trip there every March to ski. We get to go out there with our friends and spend time with them. It’s our favorite place to be. This year I knew it was a little bit different. We had talked about engagement for awhile. We both knew we wanted to get married. I had mentioned how cool it would be if it happened In Colorado, a place we both mutually love.We had gone and looked at rings a few months prior so I knew the proposal was approaching, but I didn’t know exactly when. By this point, Wesley had convinced me it wasn’t happening in Colorado. March 12, 2017 started out as a normal day.
We got ready to go skiing. I had no idea what was about to happen. I put no make up on. My hair was actually in pig tails. We went out and skied.. We ate lunch at the top of one of the mountain peaks. At lunch our friend Nicole said, “let’s go to Volunteer” (it’s a black diamond and one of the prettiest areas in Breck). She had said, “let’s stop and take a picture before we go down the slope”. We finished up lunch and headed to Volunteer. We got to a flat area and clicked off our skis. This area was so beautiful. You could see the snowy covered mountain as well as the town below. We started taking pictures. Next thing I know I turned around and Wesley was getting down on his knee.
I thought he was fixing his ski boot. I actually said, “Wesley, what are you doing?” He then pulled out a box and said those perfect words that every girl cannot wait to hear. At that moment, I knew exactly what was happening. My “what are you doing” turned into “OMG”.
The biggest smile came over my face as well as tears streaming down my cheeks. The ring that I had showed him was sitting in that box.. I could not believe how perfect it was. Our friends were there and took pictures of the whole proposal. At that point, I didn’t think the day could get any more wonderful. All day prior to the proposal I had talked about eating pizza for dinner. After the proposal my friend laughed and said we aren’t eating pizza for dinner.
They had made reservations at a steak house in Breckenridge called Modis. So we headed back to the room. We called our friends and family to share our big news. After calling friends and family we got ready and headed to dinner. The table we sat at was absolutely perfect. It was upstairs overlooking the bay window of the restaurant. This window overlooked the town of Breckenridge. If you have ever been to this town you would know it always looks like Christmas. There are lights all over the trees and the snowy covered mountains in the background. Everything about this day was magnificent! As the week went on the celebration continued. The day we got back from out trip my family surprised me with an engagement party.
All of our closest family and friends were there. God has blessed us in so many ways. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to officially begin our lives as ONE. We hope to be able to take our kids back to this town someday and tell them our story. Wesley is now in headed into his fourth year of veterinary school in Knoxville, TN. I still remain in our hometown of Nashville, TN working as an RN. There is no denying its has been extremely difficult being in two different cities, but it’s always been worth it! It’s been one of the hardest things we have ever done, yet one of the most rewarding. We have no doubt we can conquer anything life brings us! Our wedding date is set for May 19th, 2018 at Riverwood Mansion in Nashville, TN. We cannot wait to begin our lives together!
