How We Met
John and I have been dating for 6 years. He and I met at Keene State College. One year after we had met and been friends we started dating and have been together since!
We had a trip planned to Ireland in October because John had earned the trip with work! We had decided to extend the trip a week after he had arrived to make it our very own vacation. We spent the majority of the time in Galway, Ireland which is a beautiful town on the West Coast.
John had told me in advance that he wanted to plan a day while we were away in Ireland. He knew how hard I had worked planning the entire trip and had asked to allow one day “free of plans”. That morning, October 7, 2017 we had woke up and he had hopped in the shower and asked me to do his hair and help him iron his clothes. He had promised me that we would take pictures that day, because we had not taken many since the start of the trip and you know how us girls are with our pictures! He doesn’t particularly like taking pictures so I thought it was sweet that he was going out of his way to look presentable for them!
After I had gotten him ready I told him I was going to hop in the shower and he told me that he was going to go head in to town to grab us some coffee. When I got out of the shower I noticed an envelope with my name on it, and it had stated “Meet me at the Kings Head Pub. You’ll find the plan for the day there. P.S you should take pictures and snaps.” At this moment I was not sure what was going on. I had thought, “Could he possibly be proposing?” at the same time I did not want to get my hopes up, I had thought “He was being cute and making his plans exciting for me to show his appreciation.” We have been together for 6 years and I have had many moments in the mean time where I had suspected he would do it. I arrived at the Kings Head Pub and told the bartender my name and that John had told me to go here and she had handed me another envelope, a shot of Jameson whiskey, and map. Inside the envelope was a hand written scavenger hunt that had multiple destinations for me to record as well as “challenges” to reach along the way. I was so excited that he was so creative to come up with that, and enjoyed the scavenger hunt!
Once I had completed the scavenger hunt the last task had read, ” When all of this is done head to the Spanish Arch. You’ll find a man with a picnic basket, ask him for a kiss.”
I arrived to the Spanish Arch and saw him with the picnic basket!! He was so excited to see me! He had handed me the coffee that he had promised, I had then given him a kiss. He had said to me, “Hey! We need to take that picture I promised you. You also need to show you completed the scavenger hunt and found me.” We headed in front of the Spanish Arch and he had asked a couple of Rugby players to take a few pictures. I remember looking at the boys to see if they had my phone figured out, and then turn back to face John to see that he was down on one knee! I was in shock! I started to laugh and cry at the same time I could not believe it was happening, and at the same time people all around were clapping and cheering. He had said, “I had this whole speech planned out for me to say- and I lost it. Will you marry me?” He had put the ring on my finger, I gave him a huge hug and then he said, “So does that mean yes, you did not say anything?” haha. So of course I said yes! Ireland and specifically Galway will forever be a special place to us and a place we will never forget.
