How We Met
Josh and I first met in 2008. We were freshmen in high school and shared the same math class. Throughout our high school years, we developed a close friendship and became each other’s closest friends. We even went to our senior prom together! As high school came to a close, we both realized we cared for each other on a deeper level than friendship. Due to past circumstances, I was nervous to start a relationship and protective over the friendship we shared. In the summer of 2013, after our freshman year of college, I studied abroad for 6 weeks in Costa Rica. Josh wrote me a letter for each day I was gone so I would always have a piece of home. It was then I realized how much I valued our relationship beyond friendship. In December 2013, Josh officially asked me to be his girlfriend and the rest is history!
How They Asked
Josh proposed on July 3, 2021, in San Francisco where we live with our golden retriever, Louie. Josh told me that one of our friends had planned a boat trip to celebrate the 4th of July. That day, our friends came over to our apartment to enjoy drinks and food before the boat ride.
When we arrived at the dock to board the boat, I noticed that the front was decorated with gorgeous flowers, but did not think twice about it because I often saw boats with decorations. The boat set sail as the sun began to set. The Captain of the boat stopped under the Bay Bridge and told us this would be a great spot to take pictures.
Our group of friends took pictures and then suggested Josh and I take some together. At that moment, Josh got down on one knee. I was overwhelmed with emotion but noticed he was not saying anything. I followed Josh’s gaze to the back of the boat and saw my parents and best friends from Arizona climb out from the Captain’s Quarters where they had been hiding the whole time.
I was completely surprised and so grateful to have them there for this moment. Josh proceeded to ask me to marry him and I responded with the “heck yes!” We popped champagne and finished sailing around Alcatraz. We then spent the rest of the night celebrating at a lovely dinner and celebrating at one of our favorite bars in SF. My dad even rode the mechanical bull!
