how they asked: David and I have been dating for about four years! We met in college and hit it off right away.
We both knew we were meant to be together and after a month of dating, David asked me to be his girlfriend at a Halloween party.
From that day forward, we grew even closer as we both studied abroad while maintaining a long distance relationship.
After college, we both lived in separate towns. I began pursuing my master’s degree in communication studies.
The summer after my first year in graduate school, I knew the engagement was coming. We talked about getting engaged multiple times, but I didn’t think it would happen for a few months.
Because I kept bugging David about getting engaged, I knew he wanted to surprise me.
The day after David’s birthday, he came into town. I had planned a birthday dinner for him at the restaurant Destihl in Normal, IL. Once we arrived at the restaurant, David and I ordered our food and everything seemed normal. Before our food arrived, David got a call from his “sister.”
He couldn’t really hear in the restaurant so he ran outside to chat with her. It turns out that he was talking to my roommate who he had contacted to videotape the proposal.
After David headed back inside, he started to act a little strange! He brought up our engagement again and before I knew it David was on one knee!
Even so, David tricked me into thinking that the engagement still wasn’t happening.
I didn’t believe him! He got back up into the booth and pulled out a box. Even though there was a box in front of me, I still didn’t believe him!
It wasn’t until he got down on one knee, opened the box, and asked me to marry him that I really knew it was happening!
David never fails to make me smile and laugh. He is my rock. He helps me look on the bright side of things, and I don’t think I would be the person I am today without him.
We are happily engaged and planning a spring wedding for May of 2017!
