How We Met
We met at Bible camp in 2014 going into our junior year of high school. One of his cabin mates introduced us, but I was immediately uninterested as I was chasing another boy. Fast forward to January 2017, we’re both graduated- he’s going to college and I’m working at a coffee shop. I start a little flirting on Twitter and in May we went on our first date: the drive-in. We saw Guardians of the Galaxy, and that movie will always hold a special spot in my heart. We were long distance for 2.5 years and always dreamed that someday we wouldn’t have to travel so far. Most summers were spent hiking and doing anything to get us outside.
How They Asked
On top of a proposal being memorable enough, it happened just as the COVID-19 outbreak started getting bad. He had an elaborate plan to have a friend take me on a photo shoot at a hike, propose, and then go out to a nice dinner with our parents. This plan had been in motion for months and I was completely oblivious. However, that fell apart the week of the proposal. We lost our photographer and restaurants were closed completely due to the outbreak.
Shad suggested that we hang out and go on a hike to the beach. I was onboard, but immediately suspicious when he told me our friends who hate hiking were coming with us. Not only were they coming with us, but they were driving separately. Odd. He also suggested that we go to the college campus to rent a really nice camera. The day of was really beautiful. It was sunny and no clouds to be seen. Shad suggested I make a playlist for our drive (another red flag- he hates my music taste).
We were waiting to turn left into the lighthouse state park. While at the light, his dad’s bright red jeep drove past. I thought it was suspicious, but he chalked it up to coincidence, and I didn’t think much of it. Our friends arrive not much later and we began a cold and windy walk up a hill with a view. We were the only ones up there! Shad suggested we do the Dirty Dancing lift for a photo, which evidently was his keyword for our friends to start filming and taking photos!! I was looking at my friends and when I turned back, he was on one knee. He asked me to marry him and of course, I said yes! It was the most beautiful day
Moments after getting engaged, a huge flock of seagulls hovered over us and I got pooped on like no other. Thankfully it wasn’t in my hair and we laughed it off. Our friends left and we went down to the beach where our parents had set up a barbecue and a bonfire for us to hang out and celebrate. It was the best day of my life and the most memorable too!!
