How We Met: Our first date was at Gravelly Point Park, right next to DCA. We spent the afternoon watching planes fly over, sipping wine and pairing it with cheese. It was an overwhelmingly great date, and we ended up going through two bottles of wine and talking for hours on end.
how they asked: It was the anniversary of our first date, and each year we celebrate by returning to Gravelly Point for wine and cheese. Call it the female intuition but I knew something was up, so I was all primped and ready when Dan came home from flag football to recreate the night when the magic happened. He had other plans though, and went to the park in his gym clothes.
After hanging out for a bit of time we returned home and got ready for dinner. All the while strange things kept bubbling up – Dan had given me flowers the day before and suddenly they went missing. His justification, he wanted to give them to me on the day of our anniversary. While getting ready I had wanted to play some music, but our roommate had borrowed our Bose sound system. Weird little quirks that triggered the thinking that something was still up.
Instead of heading to dinner, Dan directed our Uber driver to DC War Memorial. There he had a friend scatter flowers throughout the site, and music was playing faintly in the background. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was so magical and overwhelming, I literally do not remember any of this – so lucky for me our friend was their to capture the moment.
Growing up in DC, and our initials being DC – I could not think of a more iconic, yet intimate, location to celebrate this next chapter in our lives. Afterwards we headed over to POV at the W for celebratory drinks over looking the cityscape.
