How We Met: Ben and I grew up in the same town near Buffalo, NY. We went to the same elementary, middle and high school, but never knew each other because Ben is a few years older than I am. My friend dragged me out one night to watch the Sabres game at a bar/restaurant in town. I went reluctantly, with no makeup on. Ben sat next to me at the bar and we started talking. Ironically, a man sitting a few seats down said to us that night, “you two will make a great couple someday!”
We spent the next few weeks and months hanging out together. We had an instant connection and I remember thinking to myself early on, “I think this could be my husband someday.” The only problem was that Ben had an ex-girlfriend whose sister was getting married at the end of the summer. It was a destination wedding and Ben already booked his flight and committed to going. I told him if he went, we couldn’t be together anymore. He said he had to, so we said goodbye that night. I was heartbroken and thought I would never see him again.
Two days later, Ben called me. I answered the phone and he said, “Christy, it’s you. You’re the one.” He told me he cancelled the trip and could not go if it meant losing me. That was five years ago and we have been together ever since.
how they asked: Ben and I had been together for 4 1/2 years, so I was anxiously awaiting and hoping for the man of my dreams to ask me to be his wife. I knew it was coming soon because of conversations we had, but I didn’t know when or where, and I certainly never could have imagined a proposal as elaborate as the one he planned.
Ben and I went to the beach on a Sunday afternoon with one of our friends. It was July in south Florida, and we spent about 3 hours on the beach in the sticky 90 degree weather. I was anxious to leave, but before we did Ben said he was going to take our stuff to the car, so my friend and I went for a walk on the beach in the meantime. When we got back, I noticed a photographer taking pictures of a man on the beach. I laughed about it to my friend and said “Oh look, someone is getting photos taken.” Little did I know, the photographer was there to take photos of Ben and me.
I noticed Ben waiting near some trees with a bouquet of flowers. He walked me over to a beautiful shaded area, told me he loved me and would never leave me, got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I cried “happy tears” the whole time. Ben hired a photographer to be there, so not only do we have photos from the proposal, but we took photos on the beach after.
Then, Ben told me we were going somewhere else and it was a surprise. I was on the phone with my parents on the car ride there, so I didn’t even see where we were going. When we pulled up, I asked where we were. He laughed and said, “you’ll see.” He opened the doors and we were on a runway with a helicopter waiting for us. We went on an hour-long helicopter ride at sunset around beautiful southwest Florida. It was the most amazing sight with the most amazing man! It was the best day of my life.
