Christine and David

How We Met

Flashback to October of 2012. David sent me a message on OKCupid which I… politely ignored. For five months :) I was interested in someone else at the time, so my mind was completely preoccupied. That ended, so fast forward to March 2013: David had starred my profile indicating that he was interested in me, and I had starred his, so we were “matched” (and got a message from OKCupid saying so.) He decided he had nothing to lose, so he messaged me again asking me out. This time I responded and I said yes! We went out for coffee on Saturday, March 16th at Urth Caffe in Santa Monica. We ordered iced coffee and took a walk on the beach. I didn’t take my sunglasses off the ENTIRE DATE. Not even when we were inside! We now joke that he went home wondering if I had a glass eye, but not really caring if I did!

We walked and talked, and everything flowed so effortlessly. We talked about our families, our past dating histories, our hobbies, etc. He put his arm around me as we sat in the sand and it just felt so easy and right. We saw a seal, too, which I remember thinking was special. He held my hand and asked me out to lunch after our morning coffee date because he thought the date was going so well. I told him I had to run to meet my friend Alyssa for lunch (which was true,) so he asked me to go out the following week instead. I told him I was going out of town for two weeks (also true,) but he thought I was blowing him off. He ended the date by giving me a brief kiss on the cheek and we decided we’d meet up on Thursday of the week I got back. When I got back to town two weeks later, I texted him out of the blue on Tuesday to see if he was free. That’s when he said he knew I liked him. So went out that fateful Tuesday, and have been hanging out ever since. Here we are 5 years later, getting married! I’m the luckiest girl in the world!!

how they asked

For Christmas last year, David gifted me a weekend trip to a ranch in Santa Barbara that’s very dear to my heart because I’ve been going there with my family for almost 20 years. We decided to take the trip just the two of us for our four year anniversary weekend. We spent time at the ranch and rode horses all day, and then David said he wanted to take me to downtown Santa Barbara to shoot some blog photos. This was normal because he often helps me with photos, but he kept insisting that I should bring multiple outfits… which was very strange because I don’t normally change in public. I was a little cranky and tired that afternoon, too, I remember, (we had had a long and busy day!) so I really resisted the idea of doing more than one shoot. I just wasn’t having it and told him I didn’t want to do more than one shoot, and that we should just go before we lost the light.

So we got a coffee in downtown Santa Barbara, and walked around the downtown for a while just talking and enjoying window shopping. Then he said he wanted to do the blog pictures down by the beach. I love Santa Barbara, but the beaches there have tar on them and I didn’t want to ruin my shoes! But he insisted, so we went to the Mesa Lane Steps. I carefully walked down the bajillion steps in my heels, and noticed that we passed a photographer who was photographing a lady on the stairs… By this time I started to get an idea of what was about to happen!! David took me down to the beach and held me in his arms and told me he wanted to spend his life with me and that I was the most wonderful thing that had ever happened to him. It was so sweet, he was so nervous he was shaking! I held him close to ensure him I would say yes. Then he got down on one knee and proposed!

Oh did I mention, when he had his arms around me before he proposed, he was fumbling trying to get the ring out of the box, unbeknownst to me! But the photos don’t lie and it’s the cutest thing ever! Turns out… the photographer we had passed on the stairs was shooting our proposal! He had brought along his wife as a decoy, and actually caught our whole proposal on camera!

David had hired them in secret to shoot our proposal, and then we did an engagement shoot immediately after! To top it off, he had taken all my clothes out of the closet at the ranch – he knew I would be upset if I didn’t have the opportunity to do outfit changes after all!
